Subject: Updated 28B’s with new Transformers and Caps and Faceplates

“Hi James,

FedEx just dropped off my 28B SST-2 upgrade amps.  I got one unpacked and slid in place.  The new face plates look OSEM!.  Really really nice improvement.  Much classier, higher end looking.

Ok breaks over, time to unpack and set up the next one.  Glad I I'm a personal trainer the focuses on weight training....  Can't believe how much cooler it looks with the new face plate.

They sound wonderful.  Maybe this  stuff is just all phsyological, but they seem much smoother to me right out of the box.  Less hard sounding, not that the SST sounded hard.  Just initial impression think these sound faster.”

Jeff

“Hi James,

Update:

The amps just sound better all around then what I remember them as.  Maybe better then any amp I have ever not heard.  They sound more stable -- the image thrown up by the speakers is more stable.   Seems like individual instruments don't interfere with each other as much.  The amps are somehow more powerful then the old ones?  But at they same time they sound like a fully warmed up smaller/simple signal path amp.  Except no clipping.

They arn't typical amplifiers.  Something different and wonderful about the 28SST-2.  These upgraded ones I don't think are a minor improvement.  Just more purity, more fun.  Who knew their was more to get out of an amplifier.  How much better can you guys make this stuff?

I love you're guys products.  Thanks for helping to bring some joy into my life James.

The pre-modified 28B has the sides machined at 90° while the post-modified version has the sides of the faceplate machined to the same contour as the top and bottom of the faceplate.

I can paint two walls, watch them dry for an hour, apply another coat, have a coffee, turn off the lights
I believe that should pay for them .Laundrew,I didn't know you had your 28's done.Did you go with faceplates also.

Hello drummermitchell,

I ordered my 28B's after the modification was incorporated into the production runs at Bryston  :D When I received the "Beasties," I did noticed a difference in audio compared to non-modified 28B's at the dealer. I originally believed this to be a product of room acoustics between the store and my room - was I wrong. In fact, I did not know of, or fully appreciate the scope of the 28B modification until I read one of James' posts after my purchase.

The picture of the bottom 28B from the above post is one of my most cherished, delicate but roaring beasties and if you look a little closer - you can make out the JBL monolith in the background

Hey Drummer

If you have all those Torus i wouldnt waiste my money on new transformers. Its doing the same thing but it will change up your sound. I don;t plug my 14B into my Torus...... fwiw

drummermitchell

Hi Werd,it seems to me(I could be wrong),that the new transformers must give something back, even if it's just a smidge more grunt.

James what do you figure,as I have a few Torus(s),and I'm not sellin em,what are your thoughts on this.
#1:change the transformers in my 28s and caps,or just the caps.

There is some advantage in having the instantanious current draw capability in the amplifier power supply.
