If an individual posts “Brand A” sounds better than “Brand B,” I have no issues with respect to this - audio is such a personal taste.
NIce point, Laundrew. When comparing makes and models, let's bear in mind price point. I read a 2004 review of the Combak Reimyo--it sold for 14K even then--so yes, it should be something very special, as it was described as having been created not to meet a price point, but rather as a statement player--an all-out attack. In contrast, most manufacturers' models begin as a vision that meets a price point, such as, "Let's build the best redbook CDP out there for 5K retail." If that was your price range, you were fortunate to have found that CDP--you have done well. There is no need to have buyer's remorse if you have accomplished your goals within budget.
We also tend to defend the formats and products we have committed to. I have invested a lot in getting the most from redbook, so perhaps I have a conditioned response to hirez claims, such as, I doubt most hirez fans have heard what is really on a redbook CD. They have not made the investment to rise above that "$500 sound." So maybe they spent 1K on SACD, hoping that would be the end word.

Now, they have taken what is now a much easier path to DVDs, files and DACs. Fine, but I have been listening to great redbook for a long time now--my player always sounded better than SACD, but again, I had to spend for that sound. Is my redbook player better than the new hirez? I don't know--haven't heard a good setup. I would expect to have to spend quite a bit for a good DAC, though. I can't even understand the hirez lingo
