Ah, a dialog. I like it!

iTunes has a great feature for the ignored. With Smart Playlist you can make a playlist with a rule to play music that has a "Play count" less than any number (I use 1). You can either make it a random mix using shuffle, to get exposed to just the songs or just play the albums by sorting by Album (shuffle off). I play my "Rarely Played" playlist every now and again. I have another similar Smart playlist that adds another rule : "Date added"  for those CDs that I rip but forget to listen to. Likely other players have a similar feature or you scripters can write something.

agreed about the smart playlists...  I am constantly buying new music (mostly on CD), which is then ripped to FLAC on an 1TB external hard drive (and manually copied to a back up 1TB drive, both drives contain only music) which is then played through my Transporter at home, but I also compress another copy using iTunes that gets used in my iPod for the car and often while at work.  iTunes tells me there is about 15,000 songs in it's library...  I have been using and listening to my smart "not played yet" playlist for well over a year, perhaps two.  There are still about 4500 songs left un-played.  Eventually I will get though them all, but it may take another year or two.   :)   At home I am a bit more selective at times, but also use the "dynamic playlists" plug-in with squeeze center to listen to "not played songs,"  or "recently added albums"...  About once a year, I will go through and "weed out" the CD collection and trade in the stuff that I don't care so much about anymore for something new and hopefully of more lasting interest.

So, in answer to the original topic of this thread, my music collection is big enough that I rarely hear the same thing twice, unless I choose to.  When I get something new that I like, I do listen repeatedly.

Cheers

I used to never buy MP3s, and I still don't when it's an artist or album that is important to me. But for discovering new music on the cheap, or for picking up a single pop song you really like, it's a really inexpensive way to add to ur collection. Every day amazon has a special mp3 album for $1-3 bucks. I buy stuff I never would have paid the money for on CD, and it gives me a chance to expand my music horizons, so to speak.

For example, I've never heard of Deadmau5 until three days ago, and I've never really been into the club scene. But this guy is one creative mofo and I'm really hooked on this music! I paid $3 for his latest album and it sounds great even in mp3 format.

If I used an IPOD or similar, I would consider using MP3s especially the higher resolutions. However, 90% of my listening is at home on my main rig.

Everything's been digitized to hard drive:

1. Close to 1.5TB (Apple Lossless)
2. 77k+ songs - I believe over 7,000 albums.

Soooooo, next time your spouse tells you your music habit is getting out of hand, use me as a counter argument!

My collection is a bit shy of a thousand, I haven't done a careful, comprehensive count in a few years.  Probably between 800-850 CDs and not quite 100 DVD-A & SACD discs.  My collection isn't growing to speak of though; lately I don't reliably buy a disc every 4 months.  Partly my time and money is being diverted to other endeavors and I don't have as much opportunity to listen to music like I used to.  And partly there just isn't a lot of new stuff that I'm interested in at the moment.  Well, there probably is but it's a lot of work staying on top of "the scene" and truffle-pigging out the good stuff.  However I did notice a few of my favorite artists have new albums out that I don't have yet, so I'll be adding at least a few pretty soon (eg The Bird and the Bee, Kaki King).

The vast majority of my CDs were purchased new at prices that ranged from $18 down to maybe $8, with the bulk probably costing between $10 and $12.  I've probably got about the same in my system that I have in my library.

Can't speak to Bird & Bee, but save your money on Kaki King -- just not worth it, IMHO.

You've been warned.

As of yesterday, I have 13,300 albums, all on hard drive, not counting thursdays downloads. I would say I haven't heard the complete album of about 90% of my library. Much of the time I sample the tracks, do the download, then forget about it. It's the result of downloading 3-5 albums each and every day.

edit: as Wayner mentioned a few posts ahead, my whole library is backed up on 2 exterior 750G hard drives while the main library is on one 1.5T interior hard drive. All my drives are Seagate, I'll use nothing but.  :thumb:

How did you fit 13,000 albums on a 1.5TB drive?

Western Digital claims 250,000 MP3 songs on a 1T drive in MP3 format. My guess is they're all MP3's. If so, he probably has room to double that on a 1.5T drive (assuming around 14 tracks per CD).

Do mean her new one or all her stuff?  I've liked every other album a lot.

I have about 1050 LP's and 1100 CD's that are ripped to .wav files (and backed up). I still have the first LP's I bought in the 60's and most are in good to excellent condition, lately I get all my vinyl at local record fairs.

The biggest record fair is part of Hotel Congress's Hoco Fest, this year the 3 day event is September 27th, 28th and 29th, 2010 and will feature Calexico, The Meat Puppets, Robyn Hitchcock, and Camilo Lara of the Mexican Institute of Sound.

Do mean her new one or all her stuff?  I've liked every other album a lot.

I meant solely her latest album.  I have all the others.  Have seen her live twice.  I think she's a fine, fine guitarist....but not much of a singer.  This album has more of her singing than I would like.  On the "Sound Opinions" scale (does anyone else listen to these guys?), I'd give it a "Burn It".  See if you can find it at your local library.

How do you have all that backed up? I'd sure hate to see you loose your music with a hard disc drive crash.

I have approximately 3,000 LPs, 1,000 CDs and perhaps 100 cassettes (most are copies of what I already have). The LP collection is too large and uncomfortable. All insured.

Wayner

Wayner,

Who insures record collections and what does it cost?  My collection is about 1500 LPs and 4,000-5,000 cds.  I used to have more LPs but got rid of many when I discovered "perfect sound forever" cds. Then I discovered tubes, good record players and record cleaning machines.  Now I'm reversing the process.  D'oh!  :duh:
