I was just curious.  Like most, it seems that I spent too much effort/money on the gear and not the equipment.  For now at least I feel like I've "arrived" at a very suitable system I could live with long term (the limitations are mostly in my ears and lack of musical training).

Over the last 40 years in audio I've struggled with how much has been put into gear versus music (the old paradoxal question of being on the island and having to choose great gear with very little music or tons of music with crappy gear).  Compared to the above posters, I  really do "need" to invest in more music.

Ohh, about 3,000 LPs, 99% of which were bought new.  Maybe another 500+ cds, predominately for car use.

I've heard each lp and cd at least once, and most of them many times over the years.  I try to get to each one at least once every other year, but I do have a handful that never get played.

Since I bought everything new and didn't pay 50 cents for them, I have more invested in my software than I do the hardware.  Let's see.... (3000 x 6.00) + (500 X 10.00) = well, it looks like I'm about even between software and hardware.

958 gigabytes and growing.  That's all lossless, by the way (.wav and FLAC).

Not exactly sure.  I started off using 320kbps, and have switched to lossless.  I haven't got around deleting some of the lower bit rate stuff so there's some duplicates.

I'd guess I have around 150 GB.

How do you have all that backed up? I'd sure hate to see you loose your music with a hard disc drive crash.

I have approximately 3,000 LPs, 1,000 CDs and perhaps 100 cassettes (most are copies of what I already have). The LP collection is too large and uncomfortable. All insured.

:(  That's awful man.  I am very sorry to hear that.

Currently I have it all on an external drive, then two 1TB drives in raid 2 configuration on my man PC as the backup (double backup).  I plan to get another 1TB external drive...or maybe I should get two 2 TB drives, as the collection is growing.  But yeah, one should definitely backup their music files.  You just never know when disaster will strike (takes a LONG time to rip almost 1TB of music).

I have a lowly 130gb (5776 tracks), mostly CDs ripped to iTunes in Apple Lossless, but also have been buying a lot of MP3s from amazon's deal of the day (usually $3 or less for the album).

I can't imagine having a library the size of some of you guys! Holy crap!

I will freely admit that I have way more music than I listen to often, but the deep catalogue allows for some occasional exploration deep into genre's I might usually only dabble in.

Great for random play all day for background too.

1000+ cds along with 100 or so lps. The lps are left over after I sold off my collection and found there were a few I could not part with; I no longer have a turntable and no intention of getting one.
Everything I have is hard media. When the inevitable happens and I go to virtual media I will try to keep the hard media.
I find the question of listening habits more interesting than how big. When I see the collections with 3 to 5k albums I wonder if these ever really get listened to. In my collection there are several albums that have been in the unopened wrapper for years. I listen to a few hundred cds regularly (?). When my storage capacity is met I will cull the herd to make room for new pieces.
It takes ten to fifteen listens for me to fully appreciate most albums. I just don't get it on the first listen or two so the really large collections would be a waste for me.

That isn't always the point.  I have a large number of LPs that I have only heard once but are no less valued than the stuff I listen to all the time.  There are also a lot of LPs on my shelves that I wouldn't miss if they disappeared.  But I am both a music lover and a music collector.  Nearlly all of my CDs have been ripped to FLAC for use with my Transporter, and my music buying these days is mostly focused on vinyl.

Same here.  A few months ago I was looking though my collection for some Funkadelic, and found One Nation Under A Groove on 180g vinyl still sealed.  I then remember buying the record about 3 years ago.  So I pulled it out of the rack, tore off the shrink wrap, and gave it a spin.

Not all of the albums I enjoy require that deep a listening experience.  For me large record collections are not just about listening.  I don't collect everything, but I am especially fond of swing, bebop, hard bop, and post bop jazz from the mid 1940s though about 1970.  I will go to some lengths to buy records from that period.  While much of this music is available on CD, finding a NM vinyl copy of a Hampton Hawes Trio album on Contemporary from 1956 gives me personal satisfaction and a sense of fulfillment that the CD cannot provide, even though it is the same music.  With the LP I feel like I own a piece of history.  That I might only listen to this record once or twice over the next few years is of little relevance, and is not a measure of the music's personal significance to me.
