airport express usb?
« on: 15 Jun 2010, 09:20 pm »
I did a quickie search, but didn't notice anything...

I'm pretty sure I've read somewhere that the a/p express won't do airtunes via usb, correct?  Does anybody know if there's a hack to enable this?

Currently I'm using a TADAC for dac/pre duties, but am considering trying one of the newer fancy asynchronous thingies (maybe the Wyred?).

On a side note, have any of you using an a/p express compared the toslink from it vs a macbook?  Do you notice any difference?

Thanks

The Airport Express USB port is only used for connecting a printer.

There is no available software hack to ouput digital audio from the port, but J. Gordon Rankin of Wavelength Audio posted on a head-fi.org thread:

"I did at one point yank off the audio board and hacked off the "B" end of a USB cable and soldered the wires to the header used by the audio board and did get that too work just fine. It's a pain in the a&)*(*&((* but it worked great. Not as good as the computer connected USB connection but very good at that."

But I haven't see any specific instructions or photos for the modification.
