SOLD! Twice in the last week I've done a live sound gig where I wish I had a better pair of sealed headphones. The money I made from Saturday's gig will pay for these.

I managed to score a pair of these to use at work to replace a pair of Grado SR-60's becuase I needed something closed back to reduce the background chatter in the cubicle.
The PRO 650's are very good headphones for the $$. Great bass, and they seem to be well balanced overall. I don't know about getting them at list price, but for the closeout deal, they were definitely worth it. BTW, from what I saw on the Ultrasone website, it appears that they have been replaced by the PRO 750, that's why they were such a good deal.

So far they definitely seem to be less fatiguing than the Grado's, with better sound all around.

My Pro 650s will get delivered today. I'll run a break-in signal through them all week and mix a live performance with them next weekend. Then I'll throw on some tunes and see how they do. Should be fun!

This goes to show you how different people are. I listen to Grado SR-60s 8-10 hours a day, five days a week, and find the sound fantastic. That's using a tube-based amplifier, though.

Yup, mine should arrive today as well. No HP rig at home, so I'll test them out Tuesday at work.

So, here's my plan

TUE 6/22: Do some A/Bing of the Pro650 with my DT990/660 at work. Decide that the existing setup was best, and decide to delegate the Pro650 to ipod duty.

THUR 6/24: Pull out the ipod to do some yardwork. Decide the Pro650s sound good out of the ipod. After 5 minutes of yardwork, sweaty ears. Switch back to the JVC Marshmallows. Decide that the Marshmallows sound good enough for yardwork.

FRI 6/25: Try the Pro650s at work again. Nope, the DT990s sound better.

SAT 6/26: List the Pro650s for sale on HeadFi for $172 plus shipping.

SUN 6/27: After numerous posts about me gouging for a profit, I go to one of the golf forums and trade the Pro650s for a decent putter.

THUR 7/1: With the new putter, I shoot 2 under par at Torrey Pines. I quickly decide that the Pro650 was the best headphone purchase I ever made.

Mine arrived Friday and I've put about 10 hours on them. Initial impressions are good, the overall sound quality and especially the bass are noticeably better than my SR-60's. They also do a good, but not great job of blocking external sounds. I have not noticed any ear fatigue, but see below.

The bad is that they are not very comfortable in comparison to the SR-60's. The 650's are much heavier and exert a lot more pressure on the sides of my head. I wear eye glasses and they press on the bows. After an hour or two I have to take them off, although that may improve over time. I can and sometimes do wear the SR-60s for 3-4 hours at work, I doubt I'll ever be able to do that with the 650's.

Overall, I like the 650's. The sound quality is a definite improvement and while they do become uncomfortable after an hour or 2, they are fine again after a short break. At the $299 list price I would not have been happy, but for $100 I feel I got a very good set of cans.

They are a little tight, and I too wear glasses, but I am in and out of my desk, so 45 to an hour minutes is about the maximum time they spend on my head at once. I had a pair of Beyerdynamic DT-235's that were even tighter so I gave them to my wife.

I used my Pro 650s this morning to soundcheck the band for tomorrow's church service. I compared them to the Audio Technica ATH-M35s I usually use for mixing/monitoring. The two phones sound very different. The ATs are definitely voiced for vocal monitoring. Lots of presence and clarity in the midband but not much bass and not very extended on top. The 650s are much more full range with deep bass and clear, clean highs. With the 650s I could track the bass guitar in the mix and balance the overhead drum mics, which I couldn't do with the ATs. OTOH, the 650s sounded recessed in the midrange compared to the ATs. It was much easier to balance vocal levels with the ATs.

So depending on what I was listening for, I found myself going back and forth between the two phones.

OK, I've gotten to spend some time with these. While they are a shade below my DT990/600s, they still sound great. This was a great bargain.
