JBL 150 A Tell me about them!
« on: 14 Jun 2010, 10:46 pm »
Any thoughts, impressions or comments on the JBL 150A model floorstanding  speakers. There might be a pair around for purchase. They appear to be in Very good shape. From what i have read they look a little power hungry.
Any details on the sound? Fair price for a pair in this shape? Looking to run these with Wyred 4 sound amp and preamp. Thanks!

I don't remember these at all. Looks like an L100 with a sub. Might be a nice speaker.

Starting at 600....I am leaning towards somewhere around 450.I want to have a speaker tech give them a once over.1981 vintage? No doubt voiced to AC/DC and a few other wallbangers.Happy with my AR 9 's on this system but drooling over these JBL'S.Maybe fate will decide for me? If they are deemed ready to play i guess i am in at 500 and will go back and forth with the AR'S.

jazz- I have 3 sets of JBL's, the oldest set sounds the absolute best...

 **1) 4312A's
     2) L20T's
     3) E80's
If you get them let us know how they sound???

The JBL L 150 A speakers arrived yesterday. The guy who found them [a "picker"]  knew what he had and the price ended up at 550.00.I had a speaker tech sweep them and look at the surrounds and they were deemed in great shape.Frankly,i was on the fence on these because of my AR 90's and the time and money i put into the restoration.A great speaker, but into the closet they went when i hooked up these JBL'S. They are now on my den system and share duties with TV sound in this large cabin like wooden room with high arcing ceilings made of good mid 40's wood. A room speakers either get lost in or caress every nook and cranny like these JBL'S do with a massive, detailed and articulate sound. They are driven by Wyred 4 Sounds' ST-250 power amp and STP pre amp and the source for CD only in this room is the EAR Acute with some nice NOS tubes. With about three hours listening i am smitten with this sound. The louder they play, the better they sound.I got them to 25 on the power amp yesterday playing B.B. King and Eric Clapton, and that was loud, not quite leasebreaking loud, but darn loud, clear not a bit of strain or push or pop just glorious liquid volume.Today i threw Lee Morgan,Muddy Waters,Scriabin and Tom Waits at the 150's  and they all sounded glorious, warm and just right.
Is there a speaker today that can touch these under 3 or 4 grand? Lots do midrange well, lots do bottom well,a few sing in the upper registers. The balance on these JBL's  is heavenly!
