You might want to check out a band called UK from the 80's in which Holdsworth played. More prog than fusion. Very good stuff.

I got to see them in a fairly small theater here in Louisville. By the time they came here Bill Bruford had already left, replaced by some loser named Terry Bozio!! Yeah.....it was fun. (since you were/are a drummer.....I don't think I need to comment....on either guy)

BTW: you totally suck telling us how you snagged those JBL'S FOR $50!!.

Yep, UK would sound really good on vintage JBL's....it's too damn bad I don't have any.

I recently snagged this -

Outstanding if you can find a copy.  The recommendation of UK is a good one too.  You both might be interested in this -

Sorry for the lousy thumnail.  It's called "If Summer Had Its Ghosts" with Eddie Gomez, Bill Bruford, and Ralph Towner.  Good jazz plus the second disc has a radio interview with Bill that chronicles what went on with UK including some complete tracks.  Bill relates how he was sacked from UK and it seems it was done quite behind his back.  Great story with some great music to boot.

The best Holdsworth albums are when he guests for others.

The first "UK" disk was mentioned. It is a classic and probably the best work Eddie Jobson has done also. Bruford is on that one also and pulled Holdsworth into his "One of a Kind" and "Feels Good to Me" albums, which are great.

Jean Luc Ponty's "Enigmatic Ocean" album is also considered a Holdsworth classic.

Soft Machine's "Bundles" is worth checking out.

Tony Williams "Believe It" is another older one with a young Holdsworth strutting his stuff.

Gong's "Expresso II" is not well known but a definite buy it on sight if you see it album. Great sound on this one to boot.

As far as his solo albums go, I think "IOU", "Metal Fatigue" and "Atavachron" may be his classics, but he is definitely not known as a good songwriter.

Enjoy,
Bob

Since you are asking about Holdsworth, and are a drummer yourself, you must check out (if you don't have already):  One of a Kind:

Another recommendation for Gong.

Gazuese was released in the US under the name Expresso. I used this for demos going back to the late 70's.

Expresso II also features Holdsworth. Both albums have some great percussion. "Other musicians on the album include fretless bassist Francis Moze (one of many imitators of Weather Report bassist extraordinaire Jaco Pastorius), sax/flute player Didier Malherbe (who left Gong after this album), percussionist Mino Cinelou, Benoit Moerlen on vibraphone, and Mireille Bauer on vibraphone, marimba, glockenspiel, and toms. It is worth noting that mallet instruments are featured quite prominently and their use sets Gong apart."

another +1 on the Bruford "One of a Kind". I had that LP at one time. I can't believe I gave away all my vinyl, especially as I'm a vinylphool once again. Of course, I done a lot of unbelievably stupid stuff my entire life. But that's another subject.

Yeah I've gone from 90% DVD concert vids to 90% vinyl of late. Gotta see if I can find "Pulse" on the the big black disk.

Ok, back on thread. If you like Holdsworth, I think you might also like Steve Hackett, formerly of Genesis. I thought his solo on "Firth of Fifth" was just, well.....lovely, for lack of a better word. Fairly simple but so lyrical. However, I'm not familiar w/ his solo work.

this just added: (and yes it's offthread but eclein will be cool with it) I just did a search for "Pulse" on vinyl.  $400!!!!   damn.

looks like that ain't gonna happen.

Allan has been talking and hanging out with Eddie again. They have been talking for years since they live in close proximity. However, as usual, money is the barrier.

FYI, I have all of Allan's CDs and I still think Bruford's One of a Kind is his best work. To each his own.

It's true that Allan and Bruford were sacked from UK. What a joke.

When I was younger and playing drums actively I never paid to much attention to Bruford, I even met him but didn't know until afterward who he was...I'm payin attention now!!!
"Close To The Edge" never gets old to me..
I look forward to checking out UK, "One of a".. and "If Summer Had Its Ghosts"-Towner and Bruford combination is very intriguing!!
Thanks gentlemen..got a nice wish list going again..

My favorite albums under the Holdsworth name are Velvet Darkness and I.O.U.
Both are outstanding. Also Road Games,Metal Fatigue and Sand are excellent.By the late 80's I lost interest as most of his albums started sounding the same.

As far as albums under other names,Tony Williams-Believe It,Bruford-One of a Kind,U.K.-same are all great. His work with Gong is also very good.

He is on lots more albums, but these will get you started.

I saw him live several times when he was touring for I.O.U. and Road Games,
amazing and recommended if he does a concert near you.Enjoy !
