Why does Coltrane make so much more sense when you are 12 hours into insomnia and way too many scotches than is good for you?

Hmmm....I bet Coltrane liked Scotch. :) Unfortunately he liked smack too. :icon_frown:

Frankly, I find that music generally sounds better in one altered state of consciousness or another. Perhaps the ordinary, everyday state of mind is not relaxed and open enough to fully appreciate the musical experience.

I use to enjoy a dry martini made with Bombay Sapphire from time to time, but I haven't had a drink in almost two years.

I find that I enjoy music the most when my world is at rest and there are no outside distractions, of any kind.  Listening to music to unwind from a stress filled workday has tremendous therapeutic value, but for me it isn't nearly as satisfying as spending a Saturday or Sunday in an empty and quiet house, with nothing to intrude.  I wish that happened more often, but I am thankful that it can happen at all.

There must something to be said for altering one's state of consciousness or no one would do it.  Some activity of the mind relaxes, or is stimulated, depending.  Maybe Studio 54 is an epiphany of the latter.  So much for that.  And there is a time for relaxing.  After 9pm around here.  Having nothing to do with insomnia.  Just my listening time.  When I wanna be relaxed.  And what J'ro said.
