Ultravalve Joy with Salk Songtowers
« on: 12 Jun 2010, 08:55 pm »
I just got back from the Capital AudioFest (D.C. area), and the AVA UltraValves were sounding terrific with the Salk SongTowers. The preamp was the AvaStar and the source was a Vision DAC. They were producing a big soundstage in a big room with very good bass. I wrote bit more over at the Salk Forum: http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=82313.msg792586#msg792586

(Well actually I wrote a lot more and blabbed on a bit, but the short answer is UltraValve + SongTower = wonderfulness.)  :)

I'm starting to think a good tube amp with Salk speakers is the way to go. Many seem to believe you need solid-state power with Jim's speakers but thats not true in my experience! Nice to hear your comments regarding the AVA Ultravalve.

Some photos of Audio by Van Alstine amps that Jim Salk used at the Capital Audiofest:

FET Valve Ultra+ 550 Double-die, and below it, the new Ultravalve tube amp.

The higher efficiency speakers, sure, but the lower efficiency speakers need more wallop that usually means a high powered SS.

Jim never used it, at least not on the first day when I was there.  The 550 was more than enough to drive the SoundScapes in that ultralarge room.  That other rather heavy item ended up as trailer ballast.

Jim set things up so the 550 drove the SoundScapes, and the Ultravalve drove the SongTowers.  It ended up easier to move the interconnects coming out of the pre-amp from one amp to the other.

I've used a AVA T8/240 combo and a T8/Ultravalve combo on my STRTs.  I think tubes sound AMAZING on STs.  Comparing the two combos above, I really didn't have a preference.  Each had a little different tonal quality that was very nice and I'd be happy with either one.  For me, at least getting the tube in the T8 gets me the sound that I want.  I am currently in the all tube set up with the T8/UV and don't see me changing anytime soon.

In the photo with the Ultra 550, what are those funny looking purple cables running from behind the amp?  Could that be... no it can't be, speaker cables?  I'll bet someone slipped them in place when Frank took his lunch.

It's a BAT VK-600 on long-term loan to Jim Salk from a customer of his (according to Jim). It's about $10K and has two monster toroidal transformers inside (although they don't show up on the BAT website photos). http://www.balanced.com/products/amp/Vk-600/index.html

I think he brings it as backup. He says it sounds very nice. Probably not $8K more than the Fet-Valve 550 Ultra+ nice, but still very nice.

Someone built up that cable set for Jim, so he uses them (sadly Frank didn't make it to the show: would have been fun to meet him). The cables are showing a little wear around the connectors (at least on a couple of the interconnects), but they get the job done. Jim is not pushing esoteric speaker wire, and Dennis uses plain-Jane Radio Shack speaker cable when testing out the prototypes (or at least he was when I was over there once).

The funniest part of the show was the guy who latched onto me to ask which room I thought was best. He was pretty disappointed when I said Salk/AVA. He had gone around and handed out some of his femto-mega electro plus quantum-lynxosity power cords to some of the exhibitors and was reporting that they all ditched their power cords in favor of his and he won a major shoot-out and today and today only I could get one for only $500. Unfortunately my favorite room was magic-proof. I've heard differences between power cords, but not $500 worth, and I've been very happy with my $12 Volex cords on everything.

I did ask the guy what made his velociraptor 9000 cryo-blast cables better than others, and he noted that there's a close connection between electricity and magnetism. Whenever an electric current is moving it creates a magnetic field. They interact, and his cables have heavy magnets on the ends that dampen vibrations. That is a very accurate recounting of his full explanation.
