Mechanics of a Bass Trap?
« on: 10 Jun 2010, 11:09 pm »
I'm wondering what technically makes the best bass trap.  In particular, is the performance significantly different if the trap has an empty interior void of air (like a tube trap) versus a completely filled volume (similar to a super chunk).

About 8 years ago I had a recessed alcove (3'wx2'hx1.5'deep) built into my media wall so I could slide my big Sony XBR CRT TV up to it and get close to a flush / flat mounting.  I have since changed to a plasma flat panel and was just considering converting that alcove to act as a Bass trap.

Is a simple OC 703 (2"thick) panel friction fit snug into the opening enough?  Do I need to fill the void? or line it inside with additional insulation?

Thanks

There are a lot of ways to make bass traps. For the cavity you describe you'll do well to simply fill it with fluffy fiberglass and cover with cloth. However, unless the cavity is near a corner or some other place where bass builds up, it might not do much. Even if it is in a good place, a single trap only 2 by 3 feet is not enough to make a huge improvement in any room.

In terms of decay time control, no.  I terms of frequency response, possibly.

Unfortunately, the alcove is dead center in the back wall (where the TV and HT gear reside).  I do have other acoustical panels and traps in place, so this would supplement them.  From the sounds of it, I will put that way down on the priority list, if I end up with some extra materials and time.

Thanks guys!  I appreciate your input.
