4B ST Operating Temperature
« on: 7 Jun 2010, 03:35 pm »
Hello,
This is my first post. I purchased a 4B ST, with about 8 years warrant remaining, along with a BP25DA about 6 weeks ago. This is my first Bryston equipment and so far I'm very happy with it. A real step up in quality for me. My question is, how hot should the amp get to the touch when it's generally running at around 10:00 on preamp volume control? I can put my hand on it but if it was much hotter, I wouldn't be able to leave it there for long. Even on standby, it still seems fairly hot. I'm wondering if this is normal. My speakers are no problem to drive, at least 90 db efficiency. Amp has never gone into clipping or warning. I don't listen at loud volumes, I've never had preamp above about 12:00 and that was very loud.
Thanks,
Bill

I purchased a new 4B-ST in late 2001 and my amp typically is about that warm.

I use an IR temp gun and the top of the amp and the heatsink temperature is typically 115 -  120 F.  That's after running the amp fairly hard for 2 to 3 hours.

For the record, I've never seen my LEDs on the front of the 4B-ST to ever be any color except green while running.

My speakers are KEF Q70's with a big Velodyne powered subwoofer.  The KEF's are 6 ohm speakers.

About 100 - 110 F is about right depending on the bias setting.

Thanks for the replies. I'll try and check the actual temperature and see where I am.
