Marantz 8 / Marantz 7 find
« on: 5 Jun 2010, 10:08 pm »
Hi - was just in my local vinyl store and the owner had obtained a vintage (in excellent shape) Marantz 8 and it's accompanying Marantz 7 complete with tubes.  It appears to be in mint condition all labels readable easily etc.  What would something like that work- ballpark?

8-9 years ago I bought and then sold an 8B for around $900 I think.

Follow-up. Bought the Marantz 8b Amp and the 7 pre-amp for $1000 together.  Next would be a question of links or suggestions to make sure all is well with the pieces.

Nice Score!

Decide if you want to keep em and enjoy em or put them up on eBay and get about 5 grand for them...  Wish I could afford the preamp!  I've got the amp.

If they are in great shape, worth giving a listen.  They are pretty cool...

Good score :)

Unless it's been serviced or used recently, I would recommend having it checked by someone who knows how to handle vintage gear. Apart from a visual inspection of the internals, the power supply caps are usually suspect and may need replacing. They can often be re-formed by bringing them up to working voltage slowly using a variac.

I know that they were a one owner set, the owner having died recently and the widow gave them to owner's of the record shop I frequent.  They appear to be in good shape, the power cord on the 8b is a bit frayed right where it goes into the amp, all the tubes are present don't know about them yet.  The Preamp is also in good to mint condition.  Not going to sell them, short of a mc-275, these are the pieces to go with my thorens td-160 i just got from vinylnirvana.  Does anyone have suggestions on who to have look at them?

Sounds like a very special find. You would want to find someone local to avoid shipping them.

There is of course always the option of plugging them in and turning them on, it would just be a shame if there was something that needed attention. Older gear does tend to need a certain amount of TLC.

PLEASE bring them up slowly over a period of several hours on an AC variac to protect their electrolytic capacitors!

A hard turn on on old equipment that has been "resting" for years can kill it on the spot.

I've found a Marantz certified shop in Portland OR and have spoken with them.  Frank - beyond the recommendation to use the AC variac, what else would you recommend I ask them to do / look over?  Do you rehabilitate old Marantz equipment?  I'd like to do this right because I plan on keeping them.  Thanks.
