Old B&W 803D or Harbeth SHL5
« on: 4 Jun 2010, 01:49 pm »
Hi guys

im planing to buy my first real audio for the music lover. I had the chance buying an old B&W 803D or the Harbeth SHL5. for the same price
I auditioned both of em... and im still confuse Bcuz the 803D is a great deal, but i want something pure, transparent,
Right now im asking myself, wich speakers make me feel the music more, and enjoy more in long term of listening.
I hear ppl say the Diamond are hashing ... but the tweeter is heaven
The Harbeth is neutral, Transparent, Tweeter is ok... but look  OLd fashion.

It's my first hight end... my wife will kill me.... cuz i will use the money to build my basment to buy them.
Anyway, right now i have a Htr Yamaha 8180 with those Bose acoustimas 10 for the theather. for me they are ok for the movies.. since i dont watch the same movie more than 3 time.. but music is different, so in my  head dont put hight end speakers for the movies,it "s a waste of money and time to work for it.

Well any Advise for the B&W and Harbeth would be appreciate. thank you

myself not hearing any of these speakers and based on just what you wrote...I always go for coolest looking stuff, I haven't seen either one but if you think they look "old" they might get old quick...not sure I helped but you gotta go with your gut on a toss up like this. FWIW
Good Luck :thumb:

Bobo
what is the budget? I have not heard the 803Ds but I have a pair of the CM7s that sound amazing for the price ($2K US) and there is a CM9 that is even better $4K I think. If you use the search function there are real believers in the Harbeth and those that are not.
Have a look at Audiogon and see what is for sale. Good luck

Don't use your basement remodel money for speakers  :nono:  What is your budget?  You can get started for little to no money, still remodel the basement and upgrade the system as money allows.   :eyebrows:

My budjet is 8k for the basement... but i fall in love  with the speakers music... can't get it out of my head  :? . It's like this since a month.. a real "torture"  Can't control myself.

Im thinking buying the Harbeth SHL5 with the Rogue Cronus magmun intergrated amp. for 8200$
Or the Old B&W 803d sell 5800$ and with the old  Bryston 4bsst 2400$ = 8200$... but i have to buy a preamp +
I hear Kosta have trouble with his 803's  and he drive it with Bryston 4bsst. he has upgraded to 14sst.. but still not satisfy....  I saw his pics... a Dream room.. i wish to have a big house and lovely Gear like that.
If i dont take that money .. i will have to wait other 4 years to build a system. .. and i think maybe it's will only 1 in my life. Cuz i can't afford anymore. There is 2 many speakers and amps.
I saw alot ppl selling his gear... but none selling Harbeth SHL5 or the monitor 40... so im thinking ppl may love em.  But the B&W.. when u listen to them.. is like  the singer is just in front of you.

Wahhh so confuse.. i guess everyone is like this when it time to buy speakers and amp. And wonder how it will sound at home....?

That's the right question....you go with the pair you enjoy most...because you will be the one listening.
