My speaker pops when I turn off amp. Is this normal?

So as I stated in the topic, my speakers pop when I turn off my amp. Is this a cause for concern? I have a Bryston 4B SST2 and a Rotel RSX-1550 A/V Receiver. I have the amp connected to the Rotel trigger out.

If your Rotel is triggering your amp, the amp should be left on all the time. Turning the Rotel on/off will control the amp so I don't understand this turning off the amp comment of yours.

Hi Ryanz,

If you leave the Rotel powered with no trigger connection does the 4B still click when turning off JUST the amp? If not my guess is the Rotel is shutting down more quickly than the 4B and the residual power supply noise as the Rotel is shutting down may be causing the pop?

The speaker pop when the 4B's shut down is perfectly normal, mine pop everytime I shut down my 7B's.  It's not a loud pop, however and IMO it has nothing to do with what is switching the amp on and off.  I turn mine off/on directly using the switch on the amp.  The pop occurs after I engage the switch albeit almost immediately after.  As James has pointed out the pop is caused by post shutdown energy disbursement.

I'm a little confused by satfrat's comment that when using the 12 volt trigger the 4B should be on all the time.  It's my understanding that when the trigger is used a switch on the back of the 4B is flipped to remote vs. local thereby cutting the 4B power switch out of the loop and turning the switching over to the remote device.  In this scenario the Rotel is performing exactly as the 4B switch would if set in local mode.  My $.02.

Bill

Satfrat - I have the amp connected to the Rotel via a 12v trigger. So when I turn my receiver off, the amp turns off accordingly.

Bill - Okay. So yours pops as well and you don't have it connected to your receiver via the trigger, correct?

James - When I leave the Rotel on and turn the amp off manually, it still pops.

I wouldn't be apposed to leaving the amp on except I use 100% renewable energy and it is not cheap. However, if it is substantially better for the amp to just leave it on, I can do so. Also, is there a way I can check to see if my tweeters have been damaged? I'm noticing some abnormalities with them.

Mine pop as well but it's not any louder than a scratch on a record or cd.   If it's any louder than that, strangely try swapping out interconnects as they might be shorting.

OK - what your hearing is the small power supply residual as the amp turns off - perfectly normal and wil not cause any problems.

Phew. Thank you sir. Would running a high frequency sweep help me decipher whether or not my tweeters are damaged?

Correct, I don't use the 12 volt trigger at all.  It's perfectly logical that you hear the pop regarless of whether you turn the 4B's off manually or via the Rotel.  My previous amps gave off a tapering high pitched hum when shut down.  This was true whether I shut them down manually or via the preamp using the trigger.  I much prefer the mini pop of the Brystons, it's a very nice but undocumented feature .

BTW, no need to waste your expensive energy by leaving amps on when they are not in use.  It gains you nothing IMO.

Okay. Thanks for the imput on the output.  :thumb: I've heard both ways about the amp and to me, I just don't see it taking a long time to warm the amp up. If it did take a while to warm it up, then I could see leaving the amp on.

I think that's what I said Bill, the Rotel is replacing the on/off switch of the amp. So when you shut down the Rotel, the amp shuts down also. Usually these processor triggers when used with amps prevent such pops, at least that's always been the case for me. Never had a pop since I started using them. But I've also never owned a Bryston.  :D
