Battery question
« on: 3 Jun 2010, 03:31 pm »
I intend to power a B1 via 3 6v 2.4 ah sla batteries in series. I thought I would charge one battery a night in rotation using a 6v charger. The question is can I leave the batteries hooked up in series when I attach the charger to one battery? I know from a manufactures web site that three 6v chargers is no problem but will one battery hookup "fool" a smart charger? Thanks John

Well I beat the heck out of Goggle but I could find no answer there ( or here). I suspect their is no problem with this approach but I am not sure. Anyway my next question will be about switches. God bless. John

If your batteries are switched out of your system when you are charging it would be ok.

I guess the more important question might be "can any one battery last for three days between charging without suffering from too deep a discharge if it's used on a daily basis"?

Thanks for the response. I think it will work and I guess I can monitor it in the beginning.
BTW the B1 draws 20ma and a 2.5 ah battery will last quite a while. The powersonic chart shows it takes 12 hours at 125ma to draw this battery to 6v.

I think you would be better off buying 2 sets of 3 batteries and simply rotating the full sets in and out for charging.

Thanks Chris. I assume from the above you have a concern charging a single battery while hookup in series? I have been researching switches and think I have answered my own question in a way, but I welcome your corrections.

Three new fully charged 6v batteries give 19.2v. After 2 days of playing all batteries will be above 6v. Remember one gets charged every night. I am a bit over the target voltage of 18v for the B1 but this gives me a little room as the batteries age.
I want to hide these batteries in a box and use switches for on- off -charge. I wonder if three DPDT would not accomplish this? These are the versions that have on-off-on positions. The last "on" position is to the charger always plugged into the wall. If I use all the "off" positions I turn off the B1 and break the series.
