I guess he could be talented as a guitarist but I think the White Stripes are a pretty lame band, just don't care for their music at all.  Yeah, I've heard them just didn't recognzie the band members by name...never thought they merited it.

If you guys want to get a perspective on the talend of Jack White, I think this DVD does it well short of actually seeing him live.

Its basically the first 3 albums live but typical of the White Stripes a bit edgier, bluesier and harder than the Studio releases.  Its my favorite White Stripes collective.

It's all a matter of taste, personally I love a more primitive sound - I really enjoyed seeing the thrill Jimmy Page got listening to Link Wray, as I am a big Link Wray fan. When I was younger I started listening to more and more sophisticated playing as that seemed like the logical progression for my musical tastes, until I realized that I really enjoy enthusiastic & sloppy music over technical proficiency. I can appreciate the more sophisticated things, but they just don't connect with me on an emotional level.

I just quickly posted that clip to identify a lead guitar role in response to your comment.

I surely am not a rock electric guitar expert by any means. As mentioned earlier, by others, there are numerous guitarists with great technical skill, but I feel that is not the point of this film. And as the title says "It might get loud" so I definitely expected noisy guitar.

I turned 56 this past weekend, & I love Jack White's guitar playing! Hell, I like that Black Keys guitarist too. Not everyones cup of tea. Different strokes for different folks ...

JoshK,  The music in "Under the BlackPool Lights" is good (I own the DVD); but man, I really hate that fuzzy/ grainy/ unfocused camera work!

Is their whole color scheme and all a bit contrived? Maybe, but I like the concept. At least he didn't give himself a friggin fake name! (but I like the Edge.....talk about a distinct sound!)

 Isn't rock supposed to be noisy and abrasive? Doesn't it go through this cycle all the time? It's loud simplistic crap that kids love and adults hate, then it get's more sophisticated as the musicians age and sophisticated people start to 'appreciate' them.  And then some young upstarts come along to start the loop anew.

I dunno, how to choose 3 guitar players to focus on? It's like one of those damn 'best' list.

Anytime one of these discussions comes up it makes me think of the writer Nick Hornby and the idea about how people define themselves by their 'taste'.

I feel silly and ashamed for questioning Jack White's inclusion in this movie.  A little reflection (and some YouTubing) has me appreciating the comments others have made - that the movie wasn't about guitar gods at all. 

Despite this, I was still interested to know more about Jack White the guitarist, so I listened to a bunch of allegedly "great" Jack White solos online.  Without fail, I'd listen to four or five efforts that just bored me, and I'd contemplate ending the search, when suddenly I'd hear one that would really make me sit up and listen.   

I think almost all of his best stuff was playing slide.  Good call on that one, Brother Love.

So, I now suspect he really is a pretty fine player - but probably not one I want to listen to much.

What I really loved about watching and listening to him, though, is that he seems totally into his music.  And he wants to ROCK.  I suspect that this is one of the things that people find so endearing about him.  He makes his own music the way he wants to make it.  He plays his own instruments, and plays them well.  And I get the impression he'd be doing much the same stuff even if he had proved not to be commercially successful.  It's such a refreshing change from all of the overproduced crap that passes for music these days.  I don't think I've found myself wanting to enjoy someone's music so much for a long time.  Maybe he'll grow on me.  Or maybe he'll play more slide!

I can imagine that he made a really great subject for the film.

I highly recommend viewing The Raconteurs playing Austin City Limits in support of Broken Boy Soldier (one of my favs) from around 2008.  Their live version of Blue Veins is all killer, no filler.  Reminded me a little of watching old/early Led Zeppelin clips.

I think the White Stripes are one of those bands that you either love or hate.  It took me a little bit to get into them due to the somewhat whiney voice of Jack White.  Felicia hated them and hated when I played them.

My dad likes them and doesn't get into a lot of my modern music.

If you like the more bluesy side of the white stripes, start with De Stijl or the S/T debut.  After those two, in my opinion they decided to be a bit more original, for better for worse.

Yeah, that was a great but very short set.  It seemed odd going from the high energy frenetic pace to the mellow torch singer Cat Power. I kind of felt sorry for her, but she is good in her own right.

I agree about Blue Veins, a real show stopper. My favorite song off that set was Bang Bang.  They did a great version of that Cher song. I always liked Nancy Sinatra's version better (Tarantino put it on the Kill Bill soundtrack). The Raconteurs version was scorching.
