To buy a new 4B-SST2 or get old 7B-SST ?
« on: 28 May 2010, 08:41 am »
Hi ,

Should i buy a new 4B-SST2 or get a 4yr old 7B-SST (not squared) which is going at around the same price as a new 4B-SST2 ?

And how do i read the serial number (e.g. 000963 for the 7B-SST) ... is there some structure to the numbering which tells me the Year/Month of production ?

Lastly, is a pair of 7B-SST better than a 14B-SST ?

Many thanks for your advise.

Hi Steve - there should be a date code on the amplifier which will give you the week and year of manufacture. What speakers do you have and type of music listened too as well as levels.

Thanks James.
Will look out for the datecode when i audition the unit at the sellers.
So, what does the number "000963" which the seller read from the backplate mean ?

My speaker is the PMC FB1.
I listen to Jazz, Vocals, Orchestral, Big Band.
I think my listening volume is reasonable (i.e. the orchestral or band sounds full and big as in actual concert).

Thanks again.

Hi,

The 000963 is the serial number.

I would go with the 4BSST2 with the FB-1's.

Thanks James for your kind advise.
Do i understand you correctly, that your advise to go with the 4B-SST2 is that it is a well sufficient match for the FB1.
But if in terms of longer term investment to move up ranks towards sonic nirvana (i.e. gradually upgrading my speakers and other equipments) ,
would it then make sense to go for the 7B-SST ?

By the way , i have checked the backplate of the 7B-SST , it states :
7B-SST-17-SIL-220
7BSSTC-000963
05 25

So i guess it is a produced in Week 25 of Year 2005 (or July 2005) ?

Hi - correct on the date.  If you move uo to say IB1's or EB1's then I would say the 7B's but the 4B will drive most speakers well in most setups without issue.

If its any help then I found that my new 4B SST2 powers my EB1i's brilliantly and will have no problem powering your FB's.

But like James mentioned, when I tried 2 x 4B's bi-amped on my EB's they definately responded positively to more power but my average room size became the limiting factor unfortunatly.
