saba green cones, whats the bottom line?

Not sure where my interest in these drivers came from, but have been looking at ebay germany at these drivers. Did a search on here first, like a good boy, but nothing really specific came to the fore. Comments please on these drivers, especially in open baffle and possibly paired with eminence alpha's. From the little I gleaned here would I be right in assuming these would still need a tweeter, btw, I am talking about the wide range 20cm.

Start here with Fikus and explore from there. I have a set of greencones but haven't yet listened to them.

These are high-resolution VINTAGE drivers. No dealer that I am aware of, eB*y to the rescue.

Here is a little more:

That's what I thought.
Every link Ive tried was refering to vintage models.
Thanks for clarification.

hey Mariusz,
Not sure what you are into but I certainly wouldn't discount these because they are vintage. I've traveled the road to the dark side of paper cones, alnico magnets, SET amps....and I'm never looking back. Oh yeah, and OB. Can't stand a boxed speaker any more. :eyebrows:

Hi Viridian
To answer your question well......
There is nothing that I would not try or dismissed based on reviews, opinions and such. By many, I could be generalized as "curios type".
But it doesn't mean that I do not have preferences... I do, and like most audiophiles I know - my opinion is usually of no value to general community.
But generally speaking - Horns, SD (BR, TL), some OB, ML electrostats (back up) which I still own, SET amplification, NOS DACs, DIY or vintage turntables.
That should give anyone some idea of my taste as far as gear/speaker choice is concern.

As to above mentioned drivers, I am very interested in trying them out...... Given that I will be able to find them in decent condition.

Ah yes, horns. I have limited experience with them and I believe my wife would like it to stay that way.

NOS DACs,  you and Fikus should get along. I like his approach. He's moved on a bit since SABA but by all accounts they are very good.

I'm happy with what I've got and probably won't even hook up my greencones. I guess I'll remain ignorant.

I tried some greencones in open baffle (8'' and 2" Saba plus modern 15" drivers) but I wasn't too impressed and I reverted to my Visaton B200s. YMMV, so it's worth giving them a try. The good thing is that if you buy sensibly you may not lose money if eventually you decide, as I did, to sell them on.

thanks guys, not much to go on so I will take the advice of our friend and buy at only a sensible price. Was outbid on some at the weekend which is usually the case as I am always away from the computer then at our other home and can only place a bid before going. I will persist with this quest to get some and maybe I will be able to form an opinion for you guys.

I will give you twp links here and you can see a bunch of guys using them.
I had them in open baffle with good results, They do not like a lot of power and respond well to small set amps.

I have the same experience...still have them here at home (and a lot of other vintage alnicoed speakers)
