Salk Headphones

I just got a new set of headphones.  Ortofon e-q7

These are considered to be one of the best IEMs available.   While they do sound great, I think I've been ruined by my Salk and AVA combo.  There's just something missing with anything else I listen to now.

I guess I should just be thankful I can go home and listen to my HT2-TLs, but it sure would be nice if I could put them in my pocket and take them to work.

I wanted a high-end IEM and went for JH13pro.  With a good source, they're definitely high-end.  You pay for it, though...so if you don't mind your portable rig costing as much as your main rig, there are options.

A couple of weeks ago a friend bought some Sennheiser 595’s and let me borrow them.   They are open air phones.  I run my audio through an AVR to use it as a digital switcher into my TACT preamp.  I plugged the phones into the AVR.  I played my favorite CD and it was a bit loud.  I used the remote to lower the volume level of the AVR.   A bit later it was still too loud and I lowered the volume level a bit more.   I was blown away with the quality of the vocals.  They were as fine, or finer, as I have ever heard!   I took off the phones and noticed that my Salk HT1 speakers were still on.  I turned them off and put the headphones back on.  The phones were silent.  I had lowered the AVR audio to inaudibility!  I was listening to my own speakers!

That being said, the phones are very good and the bass is much superior to my TACT preamp and SVS sub combo.  It will be interesting to see how my SoundScapes will compare in the bass.

I'm actually very happy with the headphones.  I previously had Etymotic ER-4P and Shure SE310.  The Ortofons are in a completely different league, but they just aren't as enjoyable as my home stereo.

Yeah, i stick with the around $100 Shure's.  The cables always get frayed over time and one of the channels gets flaky. This is mainly because I also use them for travel, at my desk at the office, etc.  So they are constantly wrapped up and unwrapped.
