PASS Labs Pearl phono stage
« on: 24 May 2010, 08:03 pm »
I'm thinking about building one of these. I have access to the boards.

Is anyone else using one of these? How do they sound?

Also, from what I know, it can be used with a 9V battery. Correct?

Thanks for the replies.

Hi Simoon

I built one and love it. I will say that my experience is limited but it is super quiet with my sensitve speakers and sounds great. I also have the xono mc section for mine.
This amp cannot run on a 9v battery.  I think it is ~42v rails but don't quote me on it.  The 9v battery is an optional active bias I think.

simoon,
Depending on your needs...
Last January, it was announced on Pass DIY that they would release the boards for the Pearl 2.  I have been waiting for months!

Nelson just announced that he is off to Sea Ranch, and when he returns, they will consider releasing plans in June.

Now available for ordering. $100. For now, you can call direct or use the B-1 form and send in.

Yowza those are spendy boards!  I think I am happy with my Pearl/Xono.  I will keep a look out for some one selling off the Pearl II next year maybe.

You think they will be selling it for less than the $100?

Well you need two boards so it $200.  Also as a "board horder" myself i know that purges happen.  Then there is the certainty that once these run out there will be some designed by someone else.  Basicly yeah I think I can get boards for much less then $200.  All you have to do it wait.  Hell I got my whole Peral/Xono kit for $350.

Wonder how it will stack up against the Hagerman Bugle...

My money would be on the pearl II.  The Bugel look like a more budget option where the Pearl and Pearl II can and will compete with >$1k phono pres.  If the Pearl II was a retail product it would be well north of $1k

Mmm, dunno. The reason I wonder is that when I researched the Bugle over and over people said it compared with >$1k retail.

Wish the Pearl I boards were still available.
