I replaced the internal hard drive of my mac with an SSD, I had to reinstall OSX and I used time machine to restore my files and basically make everything like it was before . 128GB was enough for me I dont have heaps of music. The SSD hard drives are expensive but I believe most people spend alot more on tweaks and such and wont get the improvement this makes, also the improvement it makes on the computer speed is alone worth it IMO.

I think using an external HD is not a good idea, I think having your music directly on the main hard drive will give better sound quality, but this is just my opinion I havn't actually tested this theory.

I only got the Kingston because I got a good deal on it from a co-worker, but pretty much any ssd will be better than a regular spinning HD, I hear the intel X-25 ones are the best.

Problem there is drive size. With a couple TB of music files, storing them on SSD drives is cost prohibitive.

I just got a 17" MacBook Pro with the 2.66GHz i7 and the 128 GB  SSD to replace my aging (2004) 17" Powerbook.

For mixing my recordings it is such a benefit to have a completely silent environment. I feel like I can operate 6dB quieter and hear the same detail.

The speed in starting up and many routine functions is obvious - a computer tech friend who helped me with the set up process said he had never seen any computer power up so fast. I get less than one revolution of that rotating spoke thingy before the screen normalizes and I'm ready to rock.

As far as drive size, I worked with 120GB for so long 128 GB is plenty for my needs, although more will be welcome. When I bought, a month ago, I couldn't find any source of SSD as cheap as the upgrade from Apple - $210 in Canada - so I went that way. I love it! I know the prices on these things will be dropping at the same time as the functionality improves, so I'll buy bigger and better in a couple of years.

Meanwhile, the capacity is OK - I just keep a couple of projects on the internal HD and make backups to two external HDs after every session.
Speaking of external drives, I recently bought one of those WD 1 TB drives on sale for pocket change and love it. It is easily by far the quietest external drive I've got - almost silent and runs so efficiently it doesn't need a cooling fan - convection does it.
