Firstwatt f2 clone by Tim Rawson Sold
« on: 22 May 2010, 10:50 pm »

I am the original owner of this amplifier built by Tom Rawson in excellent condition sonically.  The amplifier is the usual bulletproof build that Tim is known for but has the slightly raw look.

You will not be disappointed, this amp is dead quiet through my feastrex 96 db efficient drivers and sounds superb.

Tim's description:
Single ended class A. Overkill power supply. Dead silent operation. Lower gain around 15db, fine for 90db+ like my own 2.5way 91db-ers. Natural intimate sound from single stage zero feedback. Runs warm but not psychotically hot. Close as can get to glass with silicon.

Reason for sale is just thinning the herd.
I have excellent feedback on a'gon as tobywhite and ebay as tobyw45, so buy with confidence.
$325 delivered to the lower 48, no backcharge for paypal.
Thank you for looking!

Close as can get to glass with silicon.
It is apparently solid state and has no tubes.

As far as photos, it is of course up to you whether to post them here or not, but myself and many others will not email for photos.

Looks like a pretty standard miniA amplifier. How many VA is the transformer? 18-0-18? What brand? Minimum spec is 300 VA.

Probably worth the asking just for the chassis & power supply (we weren't thrilled with the miniA we built, but we are really picky, certainly outperforms most amps out there). I'd loose the binding posts too.

Is this a FirstWatt F3 clone?  If so I am interested!

Hello!
When I purchased this amplifier from Tim Rawson, he described it to me as a class A at 15 wpc output that runs warm, but not too hot.  He also told me it sounded as tubelike as he could get a sand amplifier.
I used it with my feastrex 5 inch drivers in transmission line cabinets and it sounds great; much more weight that the other amplifiers I have tried.
But Tim never suggested it was a Pass firstwatt clone.
I hope this helps.
Thank you for our interest.
Kindest Regards,
Toby

You could ask him. :)  If it is I guarantee you'll sell it quite quickly.

First guy to actually respect Nelson. Nice.

Me?  I'm not sure about that.  He is a genius and a gentleman, that is for sure.

I have spoken at length with Nelson Pass, though not recently. In my experience he is a genuine individual. No pretense, no posturing and no excuses. He's certainly his own man and a gentleman at that.
Meanwhile, I have a Rawson Aleph J clone headed my way from an AC ad I answered just last week.
If you are at all curious just rear back and buy this one if it will power your speakers. It's small money and can probably be readily recovered on Audiogon when you are ready to let go of it. The price of this amp is less than the depreciation on many purchases.

I emailed Tim Rawson and he confirms that the amplifier is most similar to an F2.
Hope this helps.

Remember an F2 is a current amp and will not work with most passive crossovers. They are fanastic for single drive though.

So does "most similar to an F2" mean that it is a current source amp? A very important detail. As sts9fan says, this means it could not be used with speakers with multiple drivers, unless one was using an active passover.

See the First Watt site and the 6moons reviews of the F1 and F2 for details on the unique characteristics of these.

Yes, that is exactly what it means; the amplifier is a clone of the Firstwatt f2  current source amplifier and sounds wonderful with my single driver crossoverless feastrex transmission line speakers and sounds lite and powerless with a speaker with a crossover, like the sunfire theater speakers that I happen to have up for sale, too.
