The best Peter and the Wolf...
« on: 22 May 2010, 08:04 pm »
Need help deciding on which version of Peter and the Wolf to get (on CD) for my daughter...  Too many out there, and of course I want the best possible audio quality.  I have heard that the Bowie version is good, and I believe that I grew up with the Boris Karloff one...  then again I also remember a instrumental only version that I absolutely loved as a youngster, but I can't seem to find that one any where, probably long since out of print.  Any and all recomondations on this absolute classic would be appreciated.
Thanks-

I have the Patrick Stewart-narrated one, which my kids like:

The only issue with it is that the audio dynamic range on it is pretty wide...you have to turn up the volume pretty high to hear the narration, and then you hit some of the more dramatic parts of the music and it's way too loud...

This is the one we have:

I haven't compared it to others, so I can't say that it is "best."  But it's hard to go wrong with Leonard Bernstein...and you get the Carnival of the Animals thrown in too (which my kids and I actually enjoy even more than Peter and the Wolf)!

I realize this one isn't a CD but it is the one I grew up listening to.

Peter and the Wolf - Boston Symphony Orchestra on 78s

I still have fond memories of sitting at my old portable record player and listening to it over and over.

I don't know if you'll get any artwork, but CD Baby is selling a CD-R copy of this for $16.
