I have a pair of Swans M200MKII and really like them.  I think they are around $250 a pair.

35 watts per channel
treble and bass control
5" woofer
soft dome tweeter
rear ported

I think i ordered mine from audioadvisor but they don't seem to carry swans anymore.  The only other thing I can think of would be to call the companies on that list.  They may be able to special order them if they don't stock them.

Or anything else from this store? Preferably under $1500/pair?

Thanks,

Have long used a Creative sound card (avoiding the motherboard sound chip) feeding an external Yamaha receiver.  The speakers are a pair of Optimus AV bookshelf units.

Whatever anybody thinks of Radio Shack, from 1978 through the 80's and into the 90's, for some miraculous reason, they created and sold an amazing speaker called the Minimus 7, which was of completely metal construction.  I used them in many installations over the years, and still have pairs purchased in the 80's.  They seem indestructible, and continue to provide great sound.

The Optimus AV variant are essentially the Minimus 7 with a magnetically shielded enclosure, which allowed them to be used directly under a CRT.  That problem is obviously over with LCD units as monitors these days.

Some background here: http://www.angelfire.com/vt/audio/minimus.html

Guys I just found this discussion on home hi-fi vs studio monitor speakers, I think it's an interesting reading for all of us:

The Genelec 8020A's, and the NHT M-00's, are both extremely good.

Is there anyone using 5.1 for their PC?What are you using and do you like them?
What 5.1 system would you prefer.I;m refering to actual PC speakers not home HIFI.

1oldguy from another old guy here, I used to use a Logitech 5.1 THX system that was very inexpensive (I forget model#), I have since given it to my kids and they use it as a home theater setup. Not sure what your budget is, or how involved you want to get but here is a link that might help:

they have a cheaper version also....good luck.

I don’t even use 5.1 for my home theater anymore. Been there, done that to death. My 2-channel system is just as incredible if not better than the multiple speakers in the room. I still get surround sound, just from 2 speakers instead of 5.

5.1 on my computer? Many years ago I did it for games and like I said above, 2 channels is more than sufficient.

I don't mind spending money on a good PC 5.1 I would like to buy something that is for PC but that isn't plastic enclosures.
Anyone.

Tried once for games. Cumbersome and ineffective. The freakin' issue is - where in hell do you place the rear speakers???? Do you buy stands for them or what? I bought a PS3, connected it to the HT and forgot about using the PC for games.

Hi Nap

Your right that it's cumbersome finding a good spot for the rear speakers. But where there is a will there is a way.lol
As for consoles VS. the PC  for this oldguy it's PC all the way.Just can't get used to anything but the keyboard plus the resolution isn't anything compared to what my monitor can do.I have tried the consoles and it looks so bad next to my PC.

The challenge now is finding a 5.1 that has been built with some real quality to it.

If it's surround sound that you're primarily after, I'd suggest to take a look at the Mirage Nanosats. You'll need a receiver though. Anything on sale at Futurehop

Well Some great news.Just got off the phone with the Audioinsider.Appearently they have a 5.1 that will be sold separately that will all connect up together for PC that should be much better than what you normally get in your average store.Thing is they won't be available till Sept. But seeing as i am patient I will wait this out.
They are in the new H series. With the H6(the SUB) and their H5(Satellite).
HAVE A LOOK FOR YOURSELVES.
