Computer speakers?
« on: 19 May 2010, 05:07 pm »
Hi gang,

I'm sick of computer speakers, can anyone suggest how I could get to having a decent pair of speakers to be used with my desktop PC?

I'm thinking of several ways to achieve that:

- active smallish monitors (of good quality; any recommendation?)
- get a pair of smallish, decent bookshelves and stick Bryston Powerpac 60's to them (or to the wall); any reommendation for the speakers?
- same as above but powered with a B60.

So what am I looking at, pricewise for Powerpacs vs B60? Also, can I just stick the Line Out from the computer to the Powerpac or do I need some preamp between them????

hi, Nap!

to find good sounding 'computer speakers' is a pretty hard task i think. especially if they should be as small as possible. try the DIY scene- if you have the nerves...

on the PP thing i would say that you need a preamp, depending on your computer's soundcard?!

Dunno, I can buy any card you guys would recommend, otherwise I'm quite lost at what I really need for this.

I want something with low distortions. I hate that plastic box sound of regular computer speakers, not to mention clipping and dynamic range. I won't play it loud so I think I can go small. I just want *clean* sound.

Napalm-I use some Event TR5 bi-amplified nearfield monitors and they do the job very well.

I never listen loudly although these little buggers would get loud in a hurry, I heard people talk about Audioengine, don't know if you've looked there. I take the headphone output from my laptop to the speakers...done..no extraneous crap. Too bad I never use them anymore.. :thumb:

Werd, are you just trying to be annoying? I'm talking analog outputs here. The Powerpacs don't have a SPDIF input.

I just found this:

http://ca.asus.com/Product.aspx?P_ID=zCDHPnfR1jymHK2f

if it can drive headphones, could it drive the Powerpacs?

I have a pair of Swans M200MKII and really like them.  I think they are around $250 a pair.

35 watts per channel
treble and bass control
5" woofer
soft dome tweeter
rear ported

The audio output from your computer isn’t necessary for headphone. I know if has a little headphone icon near it or whatever but it’s a standard line-out at about 1.0v which is slightly hotter than an iPod and a lot less powerful than a good CDP.

You want to see and hear active montiros for workstation; Guitar Center or Sam Ash stores will have plenty to hear from.

Mackie are nice, KRK are nice – rich and musical.

Yamaha  tend to be flatter = analytical and dull.

M-Audio, Behringer, Alesis , Adam, Dynaudio, JBLpro are ok too, it’s a matter of taste.

Samson and Numark are usually poor quality.

*I have had a number of active speakers from cheap to expensive. I use the JBL’s (older version of the one above) on my home PC and I LOVE them. Good deep and rich bass, nice mids and highs.

These are readily available here:

any good ones amongst them? (the low price didn't inspire me much confidence...)

They look lovely  :inlove:

Nap.

I agree and that's one of the reasons I bought them.  They make more and less expensive speakers, but those fit my budget and I have 0 complaints about the sound.

Nap,

what if you try to find a good 5.1 speaker system and get the satellites for left+right separately? they are available in different sizes and can sound pretty good. check ebay for that.

maybe it not has to be a 'computer' speaker in any case?!

Alex, I'm thinking of stereo only. Like in listening to some soft music while I work at the computer.
I use a PS3 in a HT setup for games.

yes Nap, stereo. sometimes they sell the satellites of a 5.1 system separately. that way you don't have to buy the whole system- only the two for the front.
