I predict that once the BDP-1 is launched we'll have "Which hard drive is better" threads, comparing "the open, wide soundstage of Western Digital vs. bass tightness and control of Seagate".

I predict that vinyl, a rediscovered analogue format - will replace the compact disc.

 :eyebrows:

Be well...
I predict that ain't gonna' happen.  Something is going to replace the compact disc (probably already happening) but it sure isn't going to be needles wiggling in plastic grooves.

Cheers.

I take it you don't care for vinyl?

Hi vegasdave,
When the compact disc first came out I listened to a few and thought they sounded wretched.  Stayed away from them and didn't even listen to one of them for the next 8 years.

In the meantime, fearing the disappearance of vinyl, I went on a buying binge, accumulating as many EMI, RCA Shaded Dog, Mercury, etc. lp's as I could get my hands on.  I continued faithfully practicing all the vinyl rituals - regularly used a VPI record cleaner, practiced meticulous stylus hygiene, tweaked and fiddled with my TT setup (fancy high-end stuff).

But always those snap, crackle and pops.  Dust is EVERYWHERE, no matter how hard you try to keep it off your precious record surfaces.  And the record surfaces themselves - so damn variable.  I tried some premium priced audiophile labels.  Not only was the music anemic, the surfaces were in some cases shockingly bad.  But I mostly accepted this.  This was the price you paid for this wonderful analog medium.

8 years after rejecting the cd, I finally decided (more out of curiosity than anything) to dabble my toes in the digital waters.  Didn't want to make a big commitment, so it was a basic Yamaha player and a few cd's.  I was shocked at how good they sounded.  I bought a few more - same reaction.  Before long I was converted.  I jumped the vinyl ship and never looked back.  Wasn't long before I replaced that Yamaha with some higher-end digital stuff.

I actually have no quarrel with those who love vinyl.  I rather admire them for putting up with it.  It seems to be a prospering specialty medium, but I don't think it well ever be more than just that.  For me it is a rather user-unfriendly and technically clumsy medium.  It's not something that I would care to ever again get involved with.

Sorry for such a long-winded answer to your simple question.

Happy listening.

I see. Yes, digital wins in convenience and can sound rather good to excellent. However, to my ears vinyl wins out. For whatever reason, it sounds more like real instruments playing in my listening room.

As far as the fiddling around and such, I bought a turntable that keeps that to a minimum; the Technics 1210M5G. This table is the subject of endless debate here on the 'net. You either love it or hate it. I personally think it sounds great, and is much user friendly than the expensive high-end 'tables.

I do agree that it is a specialty medium. I can't predict whether it will become mainstream again. I'm not betting on it as much as I would like to.

I predict that James will  :banghead: :dunno: :banghead: :bawl: after reviewing and trying to make sense of all suggestions in the BDP-1 thread. After which he will  :finger: and spend some time  :wine: then go .

Actually I am listening to a new version of the software on the BDP-1 Digital Player.

I was amazed today when testing the system at how much memory and CPU resources are used up when processing a FLAC 192/24 bit file!

Nope. But now that I'm a "celebrity" maybe James could put the BDP-1 serial 000666 on hold for me?

I'm paying. All I want as a favor is that particular serial number.... (I guess I missed it on the BDA-1 and it would be a long wait until 006666....)

Nap.  :icon_twisted:

P.S. Laundrew you may have 000665 "Neigbour Of The BEast". LOL.
