Can a DIY cabinet be TOOO narrow?
« on: 16 May 2010, 10:34 am »
I just finished a dual Volt(3143)12" cabinet with a 1" MDF inside and 1/2" baltic birch outside.Internal dimensions are 11.5wX22.5dX39h with a front firing slot port measuring 11.5wX18.3dX4h for a f3 of 32hz.I find the bottem end to be quite light sounding.I will try and upload the crossovers in my gallery.Could my cabinet be to narrow?

Hi mclsound,

The narrow cabinets won't be a problem as the drivers are only playing bass.

I believe your cabinets are too large. The drivers have a fairly high Fs and don't require such a huge cabinet. For optimal results use a 100 Litre internal volume for both drivers. You'll also get a better transient response as well as improved power handling in the 40-50Hz range.

Best of luck,
Chloro

Harris Technology Bass Box Pro program recommends tuning the box to 36Hz and a volume of 77L- for two woofers.  According to my program, it looks like your box is about double what is optimum.

UPDATE
well it looks like one of my factory built(waited 6wks) woofers had inverted posts(battery check) causing cancellation and now hooked up to the Krell KSA 250 in a 4ohm load sounds the best i have ever hear for bass control. This is a amp built in the late 80's and early 90's....wow!!
I believe the cabinets are functioning fine now.
thanks

This happened to me once, but on the amp side.  I went from stereo mono amps for mono for bi-amping.  When I first hooked it up, i was expecting more bass, instead I was getting less... It ended up that one of the set of amps were reversed, +/- instead of -/+...what a difference it makes!

Glad you solved the situation and are enjoying music!
