PIONEER PL 600 TURNTABLE (BLACK VERSION)
« on: 15 May 2010, 08:34 pm »
Found one of these at goodwill for 10 bucks, looks and feels like junk.  No cart or stylus.  Anyone have any knowledge of this table? Parts....it looks like the only cart/stylus that will work is a factory replacement:  http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=350328525192&rvr_id=&crlp=1_263602_263622&UA=WXI7&GUID=250e14f71260a075f616dce6ffffb68f&itemid=350328525192&ff4=263602_263622

Will probably need a belt as well.....this thing is hardly seeming worth the hassle and investment?

thanks, Shane.

It would be a good beginner TT to donate to someone looking to get into the hobby.  These usually have AT3600 cartridges, and they use 22.4-inch belts.  It won't match the performance of a nice Denon, Technics, or other mid-level turntable... but it'll probably do better than you'd expect.

That table takes a headshell for straight tonearms that is a "universal" ADC type, but not as common as the universal headshells for tables with S or J shaped arms. Any standard 1/2" cartridge can be mounted in that. An Audio Technica AT-95E or one of the "Red Eds" from Ed Saunders would probably be a nice improvement over what was on there stock without going nuts.

Here's the headshell type you need if you don't have one. Used to be able to get one for $5.00, but they're getting scarce. Maybe you could shop around and check eBay over time...

It does take a 22.4" belt. I see both medium width and slighter narrower belts being sold by different dealers. Not sure which one would give you the best speed accuracy. I'm guessing the slightly narrower belt is correct and some dealers don't have them.

I don't think you'd be able to get a better table for what it would cost you to get this one going... I guess whether it's worth it or not depends on if you're willing to spend $50 -$80 to get  a lower quality turntable going. Might sound decent enough with the elliptical AT95E or "Red Ed".
