Capacitors - where to go?
« on: 15 May 2010, 01:33 am »
Hi All - I've been completely stymied on finding an appropriate replacement for the D3104 0.1 uF 50v polyprop cap listed in the piccolo parts list.  On the other hand I have some Vishay 800v 0.1 orange drops for sale  :D  Can anyone recommend a site to find them?

The Orange Drops are designed for
"Type 715P capacitors are ideal for applications where high AC current flow is found, as in certain solid-state TV vertical circuits, r-f generators and pulse-forming networks where dielectric heating is often a problem."
In the Piccolo there is none of these applications. There is NO audio application for the capacitors. Look at:

http://www.vishay.com/docs/42018/42018.pdf

There is no 100V ratings either. What are the capacitors on the site I don't know.

The thing is - all those qualities that allow a capacitor to work well in high frequency / high current applications - is very similar to what one needs in audio.  The key specs are low dissipation factor, low dielectric absorption, low esr, low leakage.   We are trying to achieve the lowest distortion, noise, and coloration possible for audio.  Hence, we often need to resort to the best possible components, even if they were designed for some other application.

The 715P are really good for tube circuits.  In the PICCOLO?  Well, the voltage rating and size are a bit overkill, but they should work and sound pretty good nevertheless.

Hi Jim,
I appreciate the response.  I'd use something else if I could them.  Seems like either a real popular size for a cap or everyone is not making them anymore.  Anyway, as always, I appreciate all of the feedback.

Jim (or anyone who can help) what about P3873-ND?  They are similar and digikey seems to have some of these, although not many.  Has anyone had any luck with a replacement for the discontinued P3104 / P3872 - 0.1 polyprop cap 50v?

Yes, the P3873 is perfect.
