Computer based Audio

My friend asked,"why do you want to use computer for audio?"

I said it is so I can use the computer like a giant Juke Box. Load all my music onto a HD and hit the random play button. I'll never have to get out of the recliner chair again. And I'll get a better balance of songs rather than the usual disc rotation.

He said that's the only exercise I get!

What are some other reasons for going with computer based audio? 8)

Sound quality. Audio CDs do not have ECC code recorded. If the CD is slightly dirty/damaged, or the optical head just didn't get a good reading, the CD unit will try to "repair" this on the fly, by creating bits out of nothing, or will just skip the sector. In contrast, a hard disk file is recorded with ECC information, and every time you read that file, you get exactly the same good bits. Unless the HD completely fails, but you'll know that quickly  :icon_twisted:

Portability. All your music collection could fit on a portable 2.5" drive that you can take with you at your friends house to listen together.

Ease of backup. You can effortlessly duplicate that 2.5" drive in order to have a backup copy of your music collection. You can even keep it in a fire-safe box.

Opportunity to buy yet another Bryston piece of gear. The BDP-1 (BHD-1?) will be out soon.

The ability to build playlists across albums etc is also a draw for me.

My PC based system is in the same room as my pool table, so the ability to develop a couple of playlists dedicated to activities is also nice.

The other one about PC based audio, and depending on how you intend to access it, is the ability to leverage that centralized library to more than one system - networked music players throughout the house and the ability to control that playback into multiple zones from anywhere on that network.
