Just recieved a copy of a new review on the 14B SST-2 from Secrets of Home Theater and High Fidelity Magazine. He was blown away with the measured response and a sneak preview of the conclusion is posted below. Should go live online as of June 1st.

Conclusions:

The Bryston 14B SST2 is a marvelous power amplifier. It produces clean, low distortion, neutral sound, at power levels few of us have experienced. Regardless of how much power one has, we typically listen to music at only a few watts. But the overhead with an amplifier like the 14B means it delivers a dynamic range that has to be heard to be believed.

That's fantastic, James.  I always consider any kudos for the 14B to be applicable to the 7B's and vice versa so everytime one or the other gets a good review its like getting two for the price of one for Bryston.

As for werd and his new 14B SST2:  :D :banana piano:  :violin: :guitar: :drums:

Hi

I am actually surprised at how this amp flies under the radar as it has. I know the advantages of putting your power close to your speakers sonically, but it does come at a cost at both convenience and money.

I wanted the 7Bs but they would have just been in the way of my family, Unless  of course i racked them and i guess i kind of did with the 14B.

there is only one amp model sexier than the 14B and that would be 28s. This 14B is massive and looks like its means business.  and you can easily bend one over on it.....  :icon_surprised:

"It's more macho to have monoblocs..."

I have often considered when all of this becomes purely an exercise based in a vanity inspired obsession.

At the end of the day, do we really need this kind of audio equipment. Can we not get by with just a simple “Big Box Store” audio system for a few hundred dollars? At what point does “bragging rights” eclipse pure functionalism - truly a very fine line that I can no longer effectively differentiate.

A quote from the movie Mission to Mars certainly comes to mind.

“To stand on a new world and look beyond it to the next one.”

A quote that certainly applies to many of us in pursuit of audio nirvana, myself included. We bring home a most cherished audio component that we have saved for, we know it inside-out by the time we place it on the shelf as we have constantly reviewed its specifications, its aesthetics and its performance based on our numerous pilgrimages to our favourite audio store.

What happens next? After a little while, we start looking at the next model and easily find excuses’ to justify a new and improved upgrade, it all starts out so innocently - does it not? I have treaded on this slippery slope as I have found myself “innocently” looking at a pair of K2s now and then.

It does make sense to me when I sit in front of my audio gear, dim the lights, burn a few sticks of my favourite incense - press the play button, slowly close my eyes and be fully enveloped in my Xanadu. In these most delicate moments in time, however brief or fleeting that they may be, logic and reason are replaced by pure emotionalism - you escape as the roar subsides and a quieting of the mind ensues.

Do I need or do I want audio equipment such as this? At one point in time I would of replied that I wanted - today, I no longer know the answer to this question.

Would this be considered personal acts of selfishness or vanity on my part? Perhaps it is.

Time to dim the lights…

Be well…

Dunno Laundrew. In my case I think it's about fighting with the room (acoustics).

I have a grand total of 4 sound systems in my home. 3 of them you can build from "Big Box Store" components.

Interesting enough, the most easy and pleasant to listen to is the cheapest one, which I assembled a couple of months ago from components laying unused in the basement. I guess it's the room. As soon as I finished installing the components and turned it on, it was just right. I didn't feel any need to mess with speaker placement or anything. Just for fun - the components are about the cheapest you could have bought from Futureshop some 7-8 years ago: Sony DVD player ($99), Sony stereo receiver ($199), a pair of nondescript tower speakers (Futureshop house brand) ($99 on sale) and a smallish Trinitron CRT TV. Grand total under $1000 tax included. The fun is that the same components were horrible in any other room I've previously used them in (that's why they gathered dust in the basement for a couple of years).

The system that gives me the most grief is the most expensive one (Bryston + Paradigm). It's the room again. No matter what I try (including swapping components with different brands/model), it doesn't sound "just right". There are some annoying reflections there. I guess I need some more furniture or something. We'll see.
