dwell,
I don't know how good your diy skills are, but there is a Grid type kit
on eprey.  The problem for me is the box (enclosure).
I built one from scratch, it is still sittin' in a wood box, but I just love how it sounds.

well my DIY skills are beginner level, I could probably build the GG kit but only have a limited amount of $ right now from another audio sale. So i'm hopping to score a used one if possible.

This first one would be the hard one, as it is only the boards, and you would have to locate and populate the boards.

And here is a populated board, but sans tubes and transformer.
It all adds up.

Good parts, though...

Thanks Lyndon, well right now i'm unable to do any DIY but the kits looked interesting. still looking for a tube preamp though, the GG is still my top pic, any suggestion for something else in my price range?

The Mapletree is an superb budget tube pre. I love my Ultra 4SE. The linestage version the 2SE can be had for around $500 used, but they don't pop up very often. If you see one, jump on it.

I got my 4SE from a fellow AC'er and I've never bought anything audio that made me smile as much. It does every thing I wanted. Big soundstage, liquid mids, but no high end roll off or tubby bass. I think the only thing more money would buy might be more transparency.

Mine has the Blackgate caps, upgrade umbilical and NOS Sylvania tubes, so it's not exactly stock, but if you got a base unit, you could add these things later.

It does have a bit of quirky old fashioned look. I like it, but some may not. No fancy machined aluminum case work here. And no remote.

My music is fun again. I think that's the best compliment I can give it.

which one, the GG or the MAD 2?  Good luck either way. Post your impressions when you get it.
