my bryston .5 preamp is well over 20 years old and still performs (to my ears) flawlessly. what i want to know is why are they so apparently immune to the problems that seem to plague other vintage preamps ie noisy pots hum ect.

One of the main reasons is the '20 year warranty'. When a design engineer sits down to develope a Bryston product they have to think in terms of a 20 year life span without issues.
