TRL Samson Monoblock Amps
« on: 9 May 2010, 06:12 pm »
I'm hoping that someone here at Audiocircle has had some experience with these amps? I spoke with Paul @ TRL and they don't have a trial period?? I hate to buy something I can't hear in my system. TRL designs and builds some expensive gear!! The TRL GT-400 tube mono's cost $85K!! The Samson amps sell for $5500.00. Oh well, any and all comments are welcome.

Thanks,

Gary

These amps could have a sticker price of $50k or more in this insane hobby ...

They sound most effortless ... perhaps they sounds like the best tube gear could without the distortion and coloration ...

Cheers
Sunil.

They make the musical instruments and voices sound live, it sounds so real and colorful. I listened to them on a hifi expo last year.

I have a dual mono version of these - two Samson mono amps in one box ...
I could possibly loan / rent   this amp locally in Tri State Area ... I would hate to ship these amps ... these are one of those last amps ...

This is the amp where all the adjectives fall away. It has unlimited dynamics (micro and micro), drive, effortlessless, ease, spaciousness, transparency - it does not sound like a tube or solid state - it is one fine amp ... practically drive any speaker with authority ...

I've heard Sunil's dual mono, and I concur with what he wrote.  I didn't listen to it for very long, but I knew it's something special.  Powerful amp, and to me effortless best describes it.  I've heard a few very good high power amps, and this one has the least coloration.  I know Sunil has paired it with a tube preamp and with a solid state preamp, so he might be able to offer some insight about matching it with a preamp.

What power cord do you use?  What finish on the amps?  Any photos to share? :D

The PC is CRL - my chassis is actually the old D225 amp chassis - plain jane sold iron in black paint ... may be one day I'll open the top and take pictures - and that may not happen any time soon as it was a huge effort to put the amp and the pre in my rack ... the top would not be fun to open as it has dozens of small allen head bolts ...

This amp is not audio porn on the outside ... this is an amp that makes you forget about the amp - there is nothing to talk about - it quitely does its job - does not call attention to itself - it is the last amp for me and for many people who own it ...

If I would replace this amp - it would be for non audio reasons ...

Paul is very humble - too humble - he does not care about marketing his products - but he told me that these solid state amps sound better than his 100k+ tube mono blocks and yes he sells them both ... some people just wants tubes in their system. Every now and then he gets an order from far east for his mega bugs tube monos ...

He says that these amps can drive any speakers and can go head on with any amp - price no object ...

Cheers

I also own Samsons.  They are stellar.  Like the Dude pre-amp, they are effortless, spacious, big, and musical.  They are also a "relative" bargain for their performance level.  If you are hunting for SS amps, it is a total no-brainer.

I have been trying to get some info about this amp and perhaps contact Paul.  But the site seems to be dead.  Does anyone know the contact details.

Thanks

Hi Guys

Tried ringing them a few times but no answer.  This combined with their site being down to my mind is not a good sign.  Unless someone else has any ideas I will get their email address from the Google cache of their site and give that a go.  If that fails - well I am open to suggestions.

Thanks
Bill
