Getting started
« on: 7 May 2010, 04:29 pm »
I just purchased a MAC iBook Pro. If I wanted to migrate to a server type playback system, what are the steps? I would like to place all my current CD's  on the server as well as be able to download high res stuff. I will still use my current CDP in my system for SACD playback. I want the server based system to integrate into my current 2-channel (see system in sgnature)

The Macbooks have an optical out which feed a DAC very, nice.  Or you could go wireless with an Airport Express to a DAC and then to your linestage/pre.

Airport Express / Apple TV will not pass high resolution files.  They only support 16-bit/44.1KHz.

Is the Apple Express enough if you plan on WAV files from ripped cds?

Yes.  That's how I'm currently using my three Airport Express.

MP3, AAC, Apple Lossless, WAV.  Not FLAC, as that is not supported by iTunes, although you could conceivably use a third party FLAC player and Rogue Amoeba's Airfoil (which can stream wireless audio to an Airport Express from other applications).

I would suggest you consider the new Squeezebox Touch. You would be able to connect to your computer using wireless or wired mode and to your DAC using the digital output of the Touch. This unit will handle 24/96 files if you decide to go that route in the future. That is the setup I use and I'm very happy with it.

SRB, do you feed the Airport Express output to a dac? That is my intention. I am wondering though how the audio/optical output will work.

Although I have tried the optical output to a DAC, my Airport Express are all analog out for less critical locations than my main system, and I haven't spent much time to be able to critically evaluate the optical output to a DAC.

The 2nd Generation Airport Express wireless N models apparently have high jitter, and were problematic for some ESS Sabre DACS.  Peachtree Audio has added a switch to adjust the jitter aperature to acommodate this (at the slight expense of sound quality) and the Eastern Electric MiniMax DAC users were forced to find an older 1st Generation wireless G model as a solution.

However, it works with most other DACs, and most Airport Express/Apple TV users will tell you that the optical out into their DAC sounds very good.

But people seem to defend what they have and Logitech Touch users will tell you that their setup is superior.

I prefer the user interface of iTunes to the Logitech SlimServer, so I am an iTunes user.  You can pick up a used Airport Express for ~$50 used from eBay, Craigslist, etc. and could give it a try.  If you don't like the results, you could always put it into service in a secondary location.  Also as I previously mentioned, Rogue Amoeba's Airfoil program allows you to stream audio from many other applications to an Airport Express.

Monoprice sells a mini-optical to optical 3ft cable.  No settings to change.  It'll just work.

SRB, thanks for that info. My dac is the PS Audio DL3. I think I'll give it a try.
Be advised, I'll be back with more questions later :icon_lol:
