My units arrived today.  I'll hook them up by the end of the week.

Mine (10R-1U-15T-I) arrived today.  I have not yet opened the box.

I have had a Monster home theater surge unit for several years.  Looks impressive with lights and meter, but is somewhat cheap inside.  A couple years ago we had a strong weather event here, and power was going up and down a lot.  I finally fired up my standby generator. which is surely not very clean and only makes 110-115 VAC when loaded.  That day my Monster "protected" my system (which was off anyway) by blowing out a MOV.  The MOV caught fire.  I followed the smell and unplugged the unit in time to save it, aside from some internal scorching.  I had previously opened it to replace the outlets with hospital-grade, so there was no warranty coverage.  I replaced the MOV for about $0.50 and am back in business, but I have never since been comfortable with MOV protection.  Depending on the sophistication of the surge device, a blown MOV might not prevent the supply of power to clients, but it negates any protection, so you might be operating without protection and not even know it.

Reading about series-type surge protection, which I did not previously know about, and the hazards of MOVs convinced me to buy the Zerosurge, and the 20% off made it even better.  I look forward to putting it in.

Moral of the story:  Don't count on MOV protection and do not EVER use a cheap surge protector in a plastic case - MOVs really do burn!

Thanks for the story.

Can you post a pic of the burnt MOV?

No, it happened a couple years ago and I did not think of photographing it.  I think either Brickwall or Zerosurge have pictures on their sites, and I just want to say that I have seen the destruction myself, in real life.

What I did not previously know is that MOV's have a finite life and can therefore be considered consumable; that MOV's commonly fail catastrophically; and that other types of protection are available and officially classified by mode of operation.  That information and more is on the zerosurge Website, and I did not know any of it before.

In case you guys didn't know... MOVs are supposed to burn during a surge, that's how they protect.

Nagy is surgeless!

All kidding aside it would be really neat to monitor the outlet pre / post Zero Surge...

I went for two units that don't have the extra isolation.  My thinking was that one I'm going to use for my computer.  The other on the stereo but I have the MuthaBuss (PI Audio) so didn't think that I need the isolation as the Mutha will take care of all the possible crosstalk.
Jason,

which units did you order?

Just a quick update.  I removed my power strip from the computer and now have the one Zero Surge unit in place.  It's on my computer, router, modem, printer, phone and fax.  The green light is on and protecting...

I use Majik Buss which is really great product but wonder about adding Zero for my digital components.

I would recommend that you use a low noise surge protector between the wall and the Majik like the Zero-Surge.  It is like chicken soup... it couldn't hurt.   :eyebrows:

Anything up your sleeves ????(conditioner/power surge)
Why not make something safe and comparable in the same time?
It would not only sell but it would make perfect sense if inclueded in your product line.
My 2c
& thanks for the tip.
