Degrees of Separation-The song version
« on: 6 May 2010, 06:48 am »
I just learned an interesting history on a new Rock/Pop song that was stuck in my head last week.

One Eskimo's "Kandi" [Listen to the tune]

It samples an R&B song "He Called Me Baby" by Candi Staton from the 70s,
which itself is a cover.  [Hear Candi's version] And to me, it is an impressive variation given the original was done by Patsy Cline!

Patsy Cline's original [He Called Me Baby]
This sounds indicative of Patsy's style, Candi Staton arranged it so differently. All very cool. Thanks to the blog at alice radio SFBay Area.

I always like learning about the background of music. Of course there are tons of cover songs--some songs have hundreds, but rearranged covers and variations on that seem less common. Know any good ones?

cheers

Thanks for sharing that. I have been meaning to look all that up myself but never got around to it (lazy).
Just yesterday I heard that song followed by the info the band, One Eskimo, is splitting over some legal issue. Did not get the details.
Man, Patsy Cline's voice is heartbreaking!
