AFCI Breakers?!?!?
« on: 30 Apr 2010, 10:02 pm »
Has anyone installed one of these things?  I just installed a circuit in my house and this thing is unuseable. It trips if you look at it funny like. My uncle is an elelectrician and told me they are worthless and he has been removing them for customers. Not ready for primetime etc.
Anyone else have a similar experince?
Gonna put in a good ole fashion one tomorrow.

I hadn't heard of them until now.  They are supposed to monitor the sine wave and detect any arcing (a jaggedness in the sine wave), while somehow knowing the difference between dangerous arcing that should not occur and the natural arcing that occurs in brush-type motors.

Are yours tripping through the use of motors?

Yeah any kind of motor and some lamps!  Generally unuseable. I tried to go the correct way but it will not work.

It's rather common to have AFCI problems! Especially in retro-fits of older homes or in homes that have a lot of older appliances and equipment. (we still have a vacuum cleaner that's 40 years old today & I mean TODAY!)
In a new home with new stuff everything should be OK.

It might be another hobby and passion, like now-14-year-old Kyle Krichbaum, vacuum collector.

Nope, it was a wedding present! (and it still works)
May 2, 1970 in Kent Ohio. Do you remember that date?

I do.  My sister was attending Kent State University and was on campus at the time.  There was an ongoing Vietnam war protest, and on the evening of the 2nd, as the ROTC building burned, the governor declared a state of emergency and sent in the Ohio National Guard.

Two days later on the 4th at another scheduled protest, events and tension led to the National Guard firing 67 rounds into the crowd of students, killing 4 and wounding 9.

A very sad day in American history.

We didn't hear about the building burning until the next day.  But our out-of-town guests had a hard time getting back to their motels.

Sorry I don't.  I wasn't born.
