Used Odyssey Stratos HT-3 Delivered Today
« on: 29 Apr 2010, 06:38 pm »
Fed Ex just delivered a 79.9 lb. box containing my new-used HT-3 that I purchased from Erik Dorr. It has some upgrades (but he was not sure which ones).  Plan is to open it up before hook-up to see if I can discern whether caps and/or power supply have been upgraded.

The amp will be used to run my Genesis Technology 6.1E fronts and cc in a HT setup.  The internal Denon AVR-4810 amps can now be used only for the surrounds, etc.  I have needed an external amp since I sold a Cary Cinema 5 to funnel some funds for a tube 2 channel set-up.

Just a couple of questions.  My understanding is that power switch is at the rear and that there is no trigger.  Can the amp be left on at all times or do I have to turn it on and off manually or utilize a separate power device to turn the Odyssey on and off.

Can't wait to get it in line. :)

I believe that Klaus recommends that you leave them on all the time, but I could be mistaken.

I leave my Kismetros amplifiers on all the time with never a complaint from them. They always kick on the minute I drop the needle or hit the play button.

Enjoy!!

Recommendation is to leave them on all the time.  I was told that the capacitors are so big that they take a while to reach full charge, and in fact if you were to turn them on / off frequently (I have 2 mono extremes) they could possibly blow a fuse.  I have blown one internal fuse at turn-on, but never tripped a breaker.

I leave mine on all the time.

Thanks.

I figured that leaving the amp on was the way to go.  The electric bill is higher, but I have always believed that it is safer for the amp to be on than constantly on and off all of the time.

Never actually checked my electric bill.  And certainly never told my wife that idle amps still cost money

I do get the sense that they don't pull a lot of juice at idle - are cool to the touch.

I think somewhere Klaus remarked the pull at idle was about equivalent to a 60W bulb.

The Stratos does run cool to the touch.  Especially when compared to some of my previous amps.

I did find the time to re-run Audyssey setup.

But, with the beautiful weekend in Boston, I did not find the time to run some of my "true & tried" demo music and movie discs this weekend, but will do so over the next week.

From the site it looks like ~ 30 watts for an HT-3.

I have 3 extremes I use across the front which I keep off because I can go for weeks without using them (3 young kids do this to ya!) and the switch makes a wicked sound when I power them on but haven't blown any fuses or breakers yet.

The do sound much better warmed up after an hour or so...

May depend on the vintage of the HT3.  I have a circa 2002 HT3 with the cap upgrade, and it draws 50+ watts at idle.  Checked it myself.

Just got my HT3 last month as well, bought it used off of Audiogon and Klaus did a full Kismet upgrade.  Not sure of the spects but would love to know!  To quote Klaus "This is one killer amp and I have to build myself one of those!"  Word to the wise, don't be in a rush this took way to long to get to me!

He told me to always leave the amp on!

Enjoy!

I've had my HT3 with cap upgrade since 2005.  I always leave it powered up unless I will be away from home for more than a few days.  Never been a problem.  It gets a bit warm to the touch at times, but never hot.  Note that I have both a whole-house surge protector and a PS Audio Quintet in front of the HT3.  Enjoy your new amp, it is a fantastic unit, IMHO. :thumb:
