Is it me or are there others who have stopped listening to US produced music since the past decade? 

I remember gradually switching off FM since 1999, as I felt that the quality of music has gone down to the pits. 

The only reason I turn on the radio is to listen to the local NPR station, which coincidentally does jazz and also classical. 

Since perhaps 9 years ago, I have turned to foreign acts to give me musical satisfaction.  I have also turned on to internet radio stations for my music fix. 

My favorite stations play Persian traditional music, Italian pop and also like French lounge stations.  BTW, for music in English, it seems that I have become partial to British rock. 

BTW:  most of the latest acquisitions in terms of physical media formats have been of old jazz/bossanova/classical LPs.

Terrestrial radio does suck but there
are still good acts out there on both sides

There's tons of great new music out there, but no you won't hear most of it on commercial radio.

I'm lucky enough to have a fantastic college radio station here. http://www.wicb.org/ I listen quite often.
Another I know of is out of Oxford (i think), Ohio. I lived near there and it was a pleasure to listen to. http://woxy.com/
Unfortunately corporate radio has taken over everywhere else and it sucks horribly. Florida had the worst radio stations I've ever experienced.

There's good music being made all the time. Most of it isn't getting played on traditional radio, but who listens to that anyway? There's a very eclectic college station here in Houston (KTRU) that plays some really unknown stuff. Some is just plain terrible, but quite a bit of it is extraordinarily good - and recent. That station always finds a way to bust my monthly music budget. I've been buying new music like mad since finding it last summer.

Please don't judge it by the first song you hear. Their set lists are very eclectic and can go from alt-country to hardcore punk just like that. They do have a few dedicated shows like their Reggae, Africana, and Blues shows, but for most of the day you never know what you'll get, and that's what makes it so incredible. It's really expanded my tastes in music. I never listened to alt-country before, now I'm becoming a minor fan. Good stuff.
