RM40s Configuration? How to Upgrade/Repair?
« on: 27 Apr 2010, 05:00 pm »
A relative has decided that his listening room is too small for his RM40s and he has asked me to take them, give them a listen ... and to enjoy them.
I am wondering exactly what these are, the boxes say:
Soundcoat
Megawoofer
Auricaps

I assume that these are options.  How is the Megawoofer(s) different?

I read that these are 4 way, and there are 2 10" woofers and a passive.

Do the 2 - 10" both handle the lowest bass, they look to be the same driver?

They have the FST tweeter and have been dehorned.

I have both standard grilles and the type with the CD slot.  I believe that the crossover mod was done for the slotted grille.

How do I get to the crossover to confirm this?

Yes those are options.  Megawoofers and Soundcoat were actually standard on the RM40 model.

In general the MegaWoofer is simply a heavier duty woofer.  Cone materials are lighter and stronger, Magnets are bigger and stronger, and Baskets/frames are built for higher performance.

They are actually 3-way with XO points at 280Hz and 6.9kHz.

The lowest bass is handled by the bottom 10" and the Passive radiator.

The upper 10" is called the "MidBass" woofer and blends to cover the higher bass frequencies.  In the newer models, they are exactly the same in construction but Brian has "magnetized" them at different strengths to cause them to be more selective in their responses to the frequencies he wants them to cover.

That would seem likely if they were dehorned.

You might e-mail Brian with the name of the original owner.

Thanks for the info.  So it sounds like a 3.5 way.

The mids have terminal screws protruding about 1/4" out the front
and a few look as if they are off center with the nuts almost touching
the metal frame.  Is there any reason why the screw head was not put
on the outside?

Who makes the mids and are replacements available?

I wonder about replacement parts because Bill (my relative) told me that it is
easy to have metal objects (screws for example) fly into the powerful magnet of
the tweeter.  I'd imagine that the mids might also have issues should a mishap occur.
I read on here that the FST tweeter is no longer available, can they be re-ribboned
should an accident happen?

I should probably mention that Bill did many of the mods; he liked upgrading them and he told me that I might want to go over them.  I'd guess that he got to the crossover by removing the lower woofer since the gasket is now loose about half way around - I know this is just cosmetic but I will reglue it anyway.  He trusts me to work on them as he knows I do good work.

Also, we are just keeping them in the family and putting them to better use since I have a larger listening room.  They had been sitting at his place for a few years unused since he moved on to speakers that are a better match for his room.

Thanks for the welcome, by the way!

I'm listening to one, the other did not have the base screwed on tight and I just noticed that the base is on backwards with the opening to the rear of the box on the one I am playing.  This also tilts the system back very slightly, was this a standard mod?

The one does sound very good, impressive focus and transparency, excellent driver integration.
