Speaker selector box??
« on: 24 Apr 2010, 12:49 pm »
Bought a new AVA preamp/DAC combo and a 240 amp recently.  Now needing to be able to power a separate set of speakers from my 240.  Wondering about using some kind of stand alone speaker selector/switch box.  Will that screw anything up and if not, are there any recommendations on which one is best?

I only need to power a single set of speakers at a given time, but need the option to switch between my Salk stereo speakers on one wall of the room used for music, and my other set of speakers mounted on each side of the TV for TV audio on a different wall of the room.

Thanks.

If you like to build things. I made one of these a number of years ago.

Thanks Mark.  I had completely forgotten about this speaker switch box project.  It is still a do-able project although the Radio Shack parts numbers may have changed and we do not have the drill templates available any more.

Frank, what about building an amp selector so that you can switch between 2 amps and 1 set of speakers.  There are a few on the market but they are rated at 100-300wpc max.  I used a niles audio
SPK-1 which can handle 600wpc but it just died and I need to buy or build another one.

http://www.nilesaudio.com/product.php?prodID=SPK-1&recordID=Automated+Switching+Systems&categoryID=Automated+Switching+Systems&catcdID=10&prdcdID=FG00240

I picked up one of these on the internet-

http://www.nilesaudio.com/product.php?prodID=SAS-1&recordID=Automated+Switching+Systems&categoryID=Automated+Switching+Systems&catcdID=10&prdcdID=FG00230

The one above can use line level or speaker level inputs for switching between amps.

But I would like to build a manual switcher that can handle up to 1000wpc.

Niles audio also makes speaker selectors-

Yes, but you have a designer at your disposal.  :D

I can re-engineer the box and make templates for those that want this handy device. I would change to the new Rat Shack box #270-1806, which is 6" x 4" x 2" and entirely made of ABS. Say the word and it will be done.

Wayner, can that box work in reverse for 1 pair of speakers and 2 power amps?  And what would the maximum wattage it can handle be?  I would certainly like to have on built it it can be used to switch between power amps and handle at least 750wpc.

I'd buy one of these if it could handle 10g speaker wire or banana plugs and could handle higher wattage.  It may be worth buying one and trying to modify it.-     http://www.nilesaudio.com/product.php?prodID=DPS-1&recordID=Source Switching Systems&categoryID=Switching Systems&catcdID=10&prdcdID=FG00003

Switching two amplifiers to one set of speakers is a very risky situation.  If you accidently get both amps turned on into one set of speakers at the same time you will blow up both amplifiers.

I would have to think about the switching arrangement to make that foolproof.

All the switchers that I have looked into have switches that are dead in the center positon + 0 + to prevent 2 amps being powered at the same time.  The Niles Audio switcher that I was using was 12v triggered by my Parasound amp.  Unfortunately I bought it used in Ebay and it died after 2yrs of use.

This is a product I could use, too.  Just simple needs:  I have a receiver in the bedroom that can hook up two pairs of speakers, but my choices are simply to run speaker pair A by itself, or A and B together; I can't just run B by itself.  I'd like to be able to switch between the speakers across the room (for normal-volume television watching) and another, smaller speaker located on my headboard (for late-night, low-level listening, mostly to taped lectures that help me go to sleep).

The switches need to be "break" before "make"

I just found this inexpensive speaker and input selector box, thought I would pass it along.
