A buddy of mine wants to unload his 1970's system. I haven't seen it yet but he takes meticulous care of everything he owns.

The Dual is probably worth about $50.00.The Pioneer,maybe $100-$200.The JBL's could fetch anywhere between $190-$500, depends on which model  L100 (there are several).These are just average used prices and not set in stone.The condition they are in also plays into the equation(everything must work and have no problems or major appearence flaws).If you can get $500 for the bunch,jump on it.Then again,used equipment is worth whatever you can talk someone into paying you for it!!Good luck.

Thanks. This guy has the cleanest car (BLACK, no less) in the parking lot at work, even with salt during harsh Michigan winters. I once bought an iMac from him. He had the original box, all manuals, even the little tiny tags and plastic wraps that are all over the computer when you buy it.

The Dual 1216 only retailed for $150 back in it's day, so I think $50 is high.

 

The Pioneer SX-828 was a top of the line receiver for them back in the early 1970s, retailing for $470 and had 60 watts per channel. Kind of comparable to the Marantz 2270, but I'd rather have the Marantz. I still think this is a quality receiver and would put about a $225-250 tag on that.

 

The JBL L100 is another story. They were quiet the speaker in their day (and still are) and they had the notorious foam rot to the grill material, which is why they had to be redone. If these speakers are in otherwise fine condition, should fetch $500 all by themselves.

I would not sell the system as a "system", but would rather see him sell of the individual pieces (speakers in the set, of course) and he should fair pretty good, in my opinion.

 

The JBLs had paper surrounds on the woofers and mid-range, but the tweeter had a foam ring around it that may have also deteriorated, but that can easily be repaired as the surround for the tweeter is also paper. The foam ring was used as a diffractor.

 

I owned a pair of these for about 15 years and regret selling them ever since.

Hey Wayner, buy the setup, sell the table and electronics and get the speakers for 200 clams.

I use a pair of L100's daily in my shop, they are indestructible. After 35 years the pleated woofer surrounds are still like new. These speakers like power, it is unfortunate that when they came out there were very few affordable amps that really made them sing, a good high current 125 watt per channel amp would be the minimum I would use.

The crossover is the weakest link. The woofer is run full range, the mid and tweeter have a basic minimal arrangement. Digging out the potted wax and upgrading the caps will improve the sound but there are complete replacement crossovers and schematics that take the speakers to the next level.

The cabinet benefits from additional bracing. I installed internal bracing similar to my VR2 mods and added another layer of 3/4" MDF to the back recess. Even though the bass still rolls off sharply below 40 Hz, it is very strong, tight and punchy with the cabinet reinforcements.

Yeah, I need another pair of speakers around here like I need a hole in the head. Because the woofer rolled off naturally (no cross-over) I actually bi-amped mine using a Marantz 250 on the bottom and a Dynaco Stereo 70 on the high end. They would put out some rock and roll.

Oh come on guys, tell him it's all worthless crap so he'll sell me the speakers cheap. Those were my dream when I got started in 1975. I'd stlll love to have a pair.

I'm not helping him sell them, I'm thinking of buying the system. He doesn't want to hassle with breaking it up, otherwise he was going to put it on craigslist. With three budding audiophile daughters, I can always use spares...

Oh, in that case $500 seems fair. JBL has list prices for all their speakers from 1970 - 1999 here.

I actually still have my original receipt. I bought the JBL L88's in 1972 for $168 each ($336 pr). A few years later in 1975 I got a couple of JBL LE5-2 midrange units for $56 each ($112 pr) and drastically modified the 88's by relocated the port and tweeter so I could install a 250 cubic inch enclosure for the mid. A 8 mfd non-polarized cap and L-pad completed the transformation to L100 status.
