Expanding our thought precesses on this matter by thinking beyond our individual calculations, how much energy is going up and out the stack when every amp in the world 250 wpc and greater is turned on 24/7.  Steve, can you get me a number quickly :D .

I really think that my B60 sounds better after one hour.

But at the same time I'm convinced I (and almost all of us) would fail in a double-blind experiment with a warm and a cold amp.

System on - check
Relax with glass of wine in hand - check

Yes - Sounds better after one hour!

I agree with you on this Robert.  I don't know about the electronics but the Dyns like to have their leg's stretched a bit before serious listening.

Any of you other Cannucks( :D) own Dynaudio speakers.  Take this in jest, my grandfather was from Nova Scotia.

Hi Tom,

The 4B may change slightly but it's a known fact Dynaudio speakers and probably most sound best after being played for a bit, Dynaudio even mention it in their manuals, I always play a few tracks through the 25's before sitting down to some serious listening.

Personally i dont find the sound change at all after a "Warm Up" on Solid State Gear..........for god sakes Bryston burns the amps in for 100 hrs.......5 minutes or 5 hours after solid state is turned on........i hear no diff in sound quality........now Tube Gear......that is a whole diff story.

So none of you fellow members know if a standby mode on the cd player or an amp plays any roll in assisting the warming process! Perhaps James has a opinon. I thought standby helped somehow and if not, then what is the purpose of this feature?

Hi,

Standby just allows for a remote turn on option.

In fact things are getting very restrictive from a power usage turn on feature standpoint - next year the regulations will be no more than 1/2 watt of power for the standby mode.  My quess is you will see a lot of product with no standby feature.

I'm thinking this is maybe one of the issues that killed Plasma TV's?

There is absolutely a significant difference after 30 min. (give or take a few) in sound, soundstage and immaging in my system.  I don't think the initial burn in process and the warm up period after power up are the same subject.  Perhaps the difference is more noticeable with larger amps.

Hi Folks,

The 'burn in' process we do at the factory is to weed out any potential component failures.

What we do to 'each and every' amplifier is run a 3KHz square wave into it at just below full power into a 'highly reactive capacitive load' (really tough stuff) for 4 days. We cycle the process at one hour 'on' then one hour 'off' repeatedly. This process will weed out what we call 'infant mortality' on the component/parts side and stresses everything in the amplifier to the point whereby potential failures in the customers home is minimised.

James whats your opinion...........Do you personally find an actual diff in sound quality after Bryston products are left on for more then 5 minuntes to an hour or so to "warm Up" or whatever?or do you think maybe we are convincing ourselves there is a diff?lol

If I were James, I would "borrow" engineering's SPICE files then run simulations for 20 celsius and 40 celsius corrected component values. I would look at differences then devise a method to measure them. At this point I would be able to scientifically demonstrate that there is a difference.

Then I'll have to demonstrate that I can hear it. Tough job. I would ask for ABX (as blind AB is BS).

Hi Stu,

I would say most of the change in sound occurs in the first hour or so IMO. The bias is changing as the amplifier warms up and I think it takes a small about of time for all the components to thermally stabilize.

Cool. I'll make a note of that.

Thanks James.  I think about 45 minutes into playing music is when the magic really starts to happen.  Once the knobs on my B60 are toasty warm is when the music flows the best.
