N1 Desktop Speakers
« on: 22 Apr 2010, 08:49 pm »
Hi All,

I just wanted to take a minute to post impressions and pics of my new N1 pair.  They are the base kit (for now) installed in a .25 cu ft sealed box (w No Rez).  Thanks to Danny and Ron J for the great advice and stellar enclosure+build respectively.   :thumb:

The sound is really terrific (~75h broken in) and are by far the best desktop speakers I could ever hope for.  Apart from some soncaps I dont see myself upgrading again.  Pardon the cliche but I really am hearing things I hadn't heard before.  I get no fatigue at all after many many hours of continuous listening which is a first.  I have them paired with a TCA Gizmo (which is a cool little digital amp with a 100Hz xover) and an X-Sub.

That's all for now and thanks again to Danny and Ron!

Thanks for the compliment Steve and for posting the pictures. Really glad that you are pleased with the sound quality of the N1's. The Sonicaps and Mills resistor upgrades will make them sound even better. Enjoyed building them for you.

Very nice!

Curious about your thoughts.... aside from dynamics (the obvious), what other areas did you notice improvements over the JB3?  Anything the JB3 actually did better than the sealed N1?

Good question.  The JB3 was a bit more coherent at my short listening distance but it was harsh at moderate-high volumes after 25 to 30 minutes.  I still think the JB3 is an impressive and great speaker.  The N1d(esktop) attacks and decays so much more cleanly and seems to have a more linear response curve.  Not to mention it keeps improving with break in.  I listen to it all day 'at work' and never have ringing in my ears that makes me want to turn it down.  I do not listen at crazy levels either but the ringing was there with the JB3 (and several before it) and not with the N1d.

Ron, how are those cabinets finished?  Thanks!

The cabinets are finished in red oak veneer and sprayed with black lacquer. They look a lot nicer than the pictures show. Hard to get good pictures due to light reflects off of the shiny black surface. I have a few pictures that were taken during construction that give you a better idea of how they look; however, for some reason the program is not allowing me to insert the images this morning from my Gallery. Will try again later. Anyhow, the N1 speakers do sound very nice and their size is ideal for desktop use.
