Question about Squeezeserver etc
« on: 21 Apr 2010, 12:47 am »
I'm still using 7.3 because of all that I read about 7.4 not seeing the Transporter and other ugly problems.

I just received my SB Touch and have a sneaking suspicion that it will require 7.5.

Can anyone advise me on whether I'm right and if 7.5 will work with the Transporter without going through too many hoops?

Thanks in advance.

I follow the slimdevices.com forums fairly closely and don't recall seeing any unusual volume of problems with SBS 7.4 or 7.5 and Transporter.

Keep in mind that with as  diverse a population of servers (Windows, Apple, & various Linux incarnations) there are always going to be a few that challenge any upgrade. Also note that a forum such as the slimdevices one is going to draw out those with problems. People who had a problem-free upgrade often don't take the time to post that everything went fine. ;-)

You will need to run version 7.5 with your Touch. While I don;t have a Transporter, I found 7.5 runs perfectly fine with my SB3, Duet and Radio as well as the new Touch which has been up and going for 10 days now.

Also keep in mind that all of the old versions are still available for download if you feel you must retreat to an earlier version.

You'll need 7.5 for the Touch.
IMHO 7.5 is much more stable than the initial 7.4 releases were, if you want to be sure use 7.5.1 beta, the 7.5.1 beta builds are not for new features but only contain bug fixes so they will usually be more stable than the release version.

I never had any issues with my Transporter and 7.4, btw. and I actually had a _lot_ of issues with 7.4 (overall) during it's beta phase so that comment about Transporter comes as a bit of a surprise to me.

Actually I was pretty much going by the comments in this forum.  It seemed to me that when 7.4 was officially released, nobody was successful in getting it working and it required firmware updates that also caused problems.

In any case, I now have the comfort level to attempt the upgrade.

Thanks.

Let us know how it goes.

My fingers are crossed.

Just to be safe, I probably won't attempt this until Saturday.  Tomorrow I'm receiving a pair of Wilson Sashas to audition and I'd hate to have my server down...   :-)

I was scared to upgrade to 7.5 but finally did it over the weekend everything went without a hitch.  It took a couple of hours because of my 4000 albums.

I am running the Vortexbox system (Redhat Linux with Squeezebox Server).  Pushed the update button, 7.5 installed and everything is fine.  3.5 minutes to re-index 12,000 songs.  Go for it.
