Crossover worknight 2 and 3
« on: 20 Apr 2010, 08:01 pm »
Three groups worked on crossovers last night and I've got 3 more tonight.
Last nights groups all had problems to figure out, and all realized what I had told them all along, speaker design is all about compromises.

This group wanted "something interesting and challenging".  They came up with a MMTMM 2.5 way that has real promise. The following FR curve shows their efforts.

The next group had what should have been a straight forward 6 1/2" two way, but the tweeter measured odd and we had a devil of a time getting something that would work.

And last was a prototype woofer that should have gotten more bass than we did- I suspect that the box may not be right.  You can see they had a phase problem that they got fixed.

Got to go and head to school.  More work to be done tonight.  :thumb:

And here is the last one for the evening.  Here are three girls holding the schematic they designed for a GR-Research M130 woofer and a Vifa D19 tweeter.  That M130 is an absolute dream to work with- so easy, so smooth.

And although this photo is a bit hard to see, the range is 200-20K Hz.  This is going to sound good and be tough to beat.  Several of the projects this year have real potential.

Dang, +- 1.5 dB over most of the audible range!

I was looking at FR curves at several sites where the M130 has been used.  Those last three girls have put together a design that is right there with some of the best (some of our pros even).  I'm really eager to see how a pair of them sound- pretty impressive for both the kids and those drivers! :thumb:

Scott, it is great to see young people having fun.  That and they'll have a memento of the experience that they can enjoy for years.  Great thing you are doing there!

Three girls and two speakers.  I wonder how they will work that out?  Stereo does not work well with 0.6667 channels, even with rounding.
