Todd Rundgren - The Wailing Wall - Third down on the list.

There's a grand old maid
  Across the sea
So the story was recalled to me
And from dawn 'til dark you hear her call
Down in front of the Wailing Wall
And she cries all day so sad and alone
'Til someone comes along and leads her home
Nobody listens and nobody seems to care
But everyday you'll find them there and
  Kneeling down
  For sadness sake
Crying just as though their hearts would break
And from dawn 'til dark you hear them call
Down in front of the Wailing Wall
And they cry all day so sad and alone
'Til someone comes along and leads them home
You know I don't listen and you know that I don't care
But everyday you'll find me there and
  Kneeling down
  For sadness sake
Crying just as though my heart would break
And from dawn 'til dark you'll hear me call
Down in front of the Wailing Wall

Dah!  The Wind That Shakes The Barley! How could I forget that one!?  :thumb:  I remember listening to that on headphones in a used CD store long ago and tried not to lose it in front of the rest of the customers.

Tall Trees in Geogia...Eva Cassidy   from Live at Blues Alley

Tall trees in Georgia,
They grow so high
They shade me so
And sadly walking
Through the thicket I go

The sweetest love I ever had
I left aside
Because I did not want
To be any man’s bride
But now I’m older
And married I would be
I found my sweetheart
But he would not marry me

When I was younger
The boys all came around
But now I’m older
And they’ve all settled down
Control your mind my girl
And give your heart to one
For if you love all men
You’ll be surely left with none

Tall trees in Georgia,
They grow so high
They shade me so
And sadly walking
Through the thicket I go

I can't believe that I didn't think of this one sooner - but Brothers in Arms always makes me teary.  I got to hear Mark Knopfler do it live earlier this week, too.  Wonderful song.

Chad

Can't believe I forgot that one either, Chad. And this one: Jackson Browne's "For A Dancer"; here with David Lindley in the saddest version I've heard thanks to David's violin.

When I think about the circumstances and listen to the song, Tears in Heaven tears me up.  Call it pop drivel if you want, but it gets to me and I hope never to relate to the lyrics personally.

...like I can with my saddest song.

Even though it's not deliverd in a sad way, when you watch your child stuggle with terminal cancer and hear Regina Spektor sing

"If I kiss you where it's sore
If I kiss you where it's sore
Will you feel better, better, better
Will you feel anything at all
Will you feel better, better, better
Will you feel anything at all"

Cuts like a knife

Gotta stop this crying at work...

I'm actually glad that you had no idea - I mention it every now and then here and hope that people aren't thinking "Oh man, here goes mfsoa again begging for pity, how many times do we have to..."

It'll be 4 years come November and I can tell you it pretty much fvcks with your head for, well, at least 3 1/2 years.

My Rave buddies have been great and I truly appreciate your kind thoughts.

"I Wish My Baby Was Born"  by The Be Good Tanyas.

i wish, i wish my baby was born
sittin' on her mama's knee
but you, poor girl are dead and gone
and grass is growing over thee

oh i'm not no saint, no i never shall be
'til the sweet apple grows
on a sour apple tree
still i hope that the day will come
when you and i will walk as one

i wish i wish my baby was born
sittin' on her papa's knee
but you poor girl are dead and gone
and grass growing over thee

Get out the Kleenex, then run to the record shop and buy all these girls albums before they are out of print.

Lush Life.

A sad commentary on middle age crisis.
To this I'll add Something Cool cause they're both about loneliness.  Woman past her prime reminising to a stranger about former happier times over a drink in a bar.  You get the feeling she does this a lot.  It's a June Christy classic I first heard when I was in jr. high.  FYI, Lush Life was written by a 20 year old Billy Strayhorn and you gotta wonder how a person this young could know about this even if they are a songwriting genius.  I read where this was going to be included on Sinatra's Only The Lonely which is maybe the most famous collection of broken hearted songs but that he couldn't agree with his arranger on this so it was omitted.

I think everyone has a particular song that is connected to an event in their lives that is a sad song for them. My recently changed at my grandmas funeral when some cousins sang "Amazing Grace" at the funeral. This is my new saddest of sad song as everytime I hear it now........well you get the point.
I have a really good version of this on one of the Usher Audio demo disc.
