Do you enjoy the Cassandra Wilson version?

No. I love CW's voice but it's not slow enough and the accompaniment is too prominent, too busy, too "smooth jazz". She also adds some embellishments I find unnecessary. My imagination has it slow and mournful; sung simply and unaffectedly with spare accompaniment.

The Cowboy Junkies version could have been good if the singer (Margo Timmins?) didn't go down at the end of every other line instead of up. I'd prefer someone with a lower, more substantial voice though.

It's one of my favorite songs yet I can't find a version I can really enjoy decades after first having heard it.

I wonder about how it would sound if Ollabelle did it.

Wasted Time...on the same album, HELL FREEZES OVER, is sad too. :(
In fact, the HELL FREEZES OVER OVER album has a nice collection of sad, wistful and introspective songs.

Hi People.

One that really saddens me up is  "It Makes No Difference"  by The Band. I think Rick Danko's plaintiff vocals adds immeasureably to the mood of the song.

Gets me reminiscing about every good woman I've ever broken up with.

If you want sad, check out English singer-songwriter Tom Mcrae. My former photo assistant called it 'suicide music'. I think the guy's brilliant.

For some reason, "Pink Moon" (Nick Drake) always makes really sad, even though I love the song.

"I Love You"  by Art Garfunkel  (written by Jimmy Webb)

Sad yet achingly beautiful.  Every human on the planet can relate to it.

"But the ending always comes at last
Endings always come too fast
They come too fast, but they pass too slow
I love you, and that's all I know"

This is one of those topics that will end up going on for ever... for good reason... pain is a powerful thing; the root of some of the most beautiful songs ever created. God, hundreds of tunes conjured up in my mind. Anyway, here's a contemporary, more obscure tune by Phil Roy (who has a few in this category) called Melt from his first album.

Another one for the road before I run out. A beautiful contribution from Lyle Lovett (& His Large Band cd) called If You Were To Wake Up.

Try this:

The first recording made by violinist Subramaniam since the passing of his wife. The artist has poured his entire heart on to the songs.

Two of my favorite sad songs, although not necessarily slow or sparse, are Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd and Say Hello to Heaven by Temple of the Dog. Being familiar with the subjects of the songs seem to make them more tragic.

Harry Chapin's "Cat's in the Craddle" is a song that always tugs at the emotional heartstrings.

Grant Lee Buffalo- Happiness:

Nevermind the words that came
Out of my mouth when all that I could feel was pain
The difference in the two of us
Comes down to the way
You rise over things I just put down

That'll bring you happiness happiness
Is hard to come by I confess
I'm bad at this thing happiness
If you find it share it with the rest of us
Rest of us

This song is beyond sad.  It evokes a despair that is primal in nature.

There was a movie about Chet Baker, made about 10 years ago.  The movie obviously included lots of music - but one of the tracks always stuck in my mind because it was so excruciatingly sad:  Blame it on my Youth.  It wasn't included on the released soundtrack for the movie, and I've never found a Chet Baker album that included it (although, I'm sure one exists).

I found a version on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OBvKx6MRZ7A

but I don't thinks it's quite as awesome as I remember the other to be.  (For all I know, it's exactly the same version, and the track doesn't quiter live up to my all too fallible memory). Anyway - it's still pretty sad sounding.

I almost forgot about this one. Gary Jules's fantastic cover of "Mad World" as heard in the movie "Donnie Darko" Gary is one of those overlooked gems.

+1 on the reference to Lyle Lovett. (one of my top 5 favorite musicians) The title track from "Pontiac" sure fits the bill here.
